The 400 Mb controversy.

Post by NeuroNiky »

Hi all,
I just read about the end of the Pacific War project... at least in its "complete" form. I'm really really disappointed by the decision that sadly Matrix Games has just taken... because, even if I understand their point of view, I don't agree with them about the impossibility of posting a 400Mb game to download. I'm a modem user resident in Italy, one of the most costly nations in the world when talking about telephony, but I'd download a game as good as Pacific War without hesitation. Yes, I'd need three or four nights of connection to the net with my GetRight working hard to get the whole file, but I'd do that for a REALLY GOOD game. And I believe that there are a lot of hardcore gamers that would rather do that thing than seeing the project fall into oblivion. Look at the Falcon 4 project: a big community united in struggling to continue a big abandoned project, and doing so well. And I bet that, if anyone tomorrow would say "Hey fans, here it is Falcon 4 final, and it's a 500Mb dl" they'd all get it. I know, maybe we are not so much as the Falcon fans, but I think that many many grognards would do the same for Pacific War. Well, these are my 0.02$. Maybe if we all tell this thing to matrix games, we can make it rethink about this sad decision. Best regards,
NeuroNiky
P.S. Btw, I'm not at all angry, nor I'm disappointed by MG. I respect and honour them for their difficult mission and for the courage they had to start this all. I'm simply a wargamer who loves great wargames and just want them not to die in these days of 3d shooters and other no-brains games...

I totally agree that the updated versions of PacWar and WIR are very downloadable. I d/l SPWAW the other night in 45 minutes, the others would be similar. And the major game sites would support it too. If you build it, they will download it! And I'd actually pay for it too!

Sniff. Sniff. Yet another Strategic Eastern Front game goes into the trashcan. (Sigh) I've been waiting for Road to Moscow to come out forever but it doesn't look like it's gonna make it. Is money the problem? I've got sixty bucks right here to purchase a good east front computer wargame (and so do my wargaming buddies)

Rob,
one of the problems is that here we all are volunteers. This means that we have a job to pay the bills, and limited time. So in a way, yes, it's a money problem. I guess it's the same with the programmers of Road To Moscow.
When debugged, despite its obsolete DOS graphics, WIR can easily stay the best Russian Front game around. At least we'll strive for it.
