Win98

Post by soulsbayne »

Has anyone tried to run this with Win98? Is it just not "supported" for use on 98, or will it truly not run. I've had a couple of other games that had "System Requirements" that included XP/2000, but have found them to run fine on 98, but aren't officially supported (e.g. Gary Grigsby's World at War). I want to try this game, but don't want to spring for the download only to find out it won't work. Thanks in advance.

It runs on my Win98 machine, but I have stuttering music whenever I do "game actions" - it may be my sound card/drivers that are faulty, I have other problems with sound/music ...

Yes, would be nice to know - system specs are

* Windows 2000/XP
* 500 MHz CPU (200 MHz for low animation)
* 256 MB RAM (prefer 512MB) (128MB for low animation)
* Direct X 7+
* 32 MB Video Card, DirectX 7 Compatible
* Sound Card (Windows XP compatible)
* CD-Rom
* 650 MB free Hard Drive space

but I don't know many people who run XP on a 200MHz, 128Mb machine (in fact, XP system specs from MS are 300MHz minimun).

So, presumably, the developers must have designed the low animation options for pre-XP.

Any comments?

What I really need to know is will it run on VirtualPC on a Mac, running W98 - which probably just about equates to a 3/400MHz machine...

I've run older versions on my 98 machines -- maybe 5 months ago. The debug versions seemed to run on them, but I cannot make any guarantees.

I'm surprised to hear that it runs on an ME machine! We had many problems with ME in beta testing, and there are documented bugs in ME OS routines that we use that MSFT recommends working around that we don't work around... so I'm surprised that it runs on ME at all.

We'll fix any OS conflicts we find on XP and 2000, but there are just too many little issues in the older OS's for us to be able to support them.

I took the plunge, and so far I'm glad I did. So far I've only had one problem using Win98, and that is manageable. If I have the unit attachment screen open, and move the cursor off it, it not only closes, but causes a CTD. As long as I remember to close it using the tab at the bottom, it works fine. Not too far into it yet, but so far smooth sailing.

I got to watch a lot of new users at the Origins convention. The auto-closing attachment box is a cause of frustration; in the patch I'll probably make it so that default behavior is to close the attachment box only through the button at the bottom, with an option to make it close on mouse-off.

Hi, It runs on my ME machine as long as I don't hit the "info" buttons. I have to work around that. Also I fight all battles with the quick system.

When I'm installing it on Win98 I get the message to insert the "codec install disk".

..it looks like its asking for Intel Indeo codecs, Ir50_32.dll among others.

It works now. Don't seem to have any CTD problems. [:)]
