Minor, nitpicky, evil geographical remark

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Minor, nitpicky, evil geographical remark

Corfu on the map is not Corfu - it's island of Keffalonia. Corfu is the island north of it, very much near the Albania coast... though I don't think this has any repercussions on the gameplay.

Here I just had to say it

On a related subject, and being nitpicky indeed [;)] , I thought "Kent" as the name for the whole of southern England was a bit weird too (Kent proper is the bit in the SE corner, BTW). A much better choice would have been "Wessex", which while out of its historical context is at least a lot more geographically accurate.

Hey, you both are really nitpickers!! [;)]
Have you take a look at the Iberian Peninsula???
Its that strange looking thing just south of France...
Spain its weird but Portugal... its awfull!!
Why can't the map be a little wider so the western and easter borders don't look so compressed?? [&:][&:]

Its just an old style, like maps were in this time. I personally like it and in my opinion it brings a good atmosphere in the game.

I love the old-style-hand-drawn look of the map, dont get me wrong!
It´s the shape of the Iberian Peninsula or the eastern border (Turkey...) of the map what i'm talking about.

Anyway, this isn't a meidieval game. XIX century maps were very preceise and exact. Maybe not the ones about Africa or Asia but Europe was perfectly charted by then. I dont think this was an intended effect, really.
I suspect the reason is to be able to fit all the map in the square minimap area on the lower right corner.

Maybe this issue could be modable... What about a Panavision map??[:)]

The map is distorted at the edges in order to fit all of Europe into the space with a miniumum of empty areas (northern Russia, North Atlantic, etc.)

In addition to geographical exactness, I vote for improved graphics (some icons, mouse cursors and pop-up menus w/ room for improvement).

Mr. Z is exactly correct, but allow me to expand a bit;

The map has a lot of memory overhead, so it's important to get the most out of it. The map is a lambert conical projection based on modern maps, but it's distorted to expand the middle; ie central europe where most of the napoleonic action happend. Sort of like a fisheye effect centered on the centered roughly on Vienna. It's rotated slightly from true north to allow the British Isles, North Africa and the Med into a better rectangular shape. Otherwise there would be really large empty quarters of the map, esp. off the north atlantic and in Russia. Even as it is, there are still some big empty spaces (n.w. africa / sahara). Downside it that the corners get squished.

So it's an intentional effect, but meant to improve the historic gameplay, not the flavor / innacuracies of the maps of the day.

Don't get me started on the whole Batavia thing..

Ok, I will, the Batavian Republic was the name for the united provinces (the Netherlands) during the french occupation.

The province names can't really be changed from scenario to scenario. Hence we had to pick one or the other. Since 1805 is the default scenario, "Batavia" seemed like an appropriate name for the province.
