Display Irregularities with 9700Pro on XP

Post by jchastain »

I am getting some awkward looking screens. The screen in changing resolution properly (I normally run at 1600x1200) but everything seems to be out of position. Even when I manually changed my default resolution to 1024x768, these screens looked the same. Here are a couple of caps just to show you what I am seeing.

I discovered the source of the problem and there is a workaround (though it requires a reboot each time I want to play).

In DISPLAY PROPERTIES / SETTINGS / ADVANCED there is an ability to modify the DPI settings. Because I normally run such a high resolution, I prefer to adjust the DPI to make icons a bit larger on the screen and that seems to be misaligning things within CoG. When I reset the DPI settings to normal, everything aligns correctly. Since this has never been a problem in any other game, I think it is fair to call this a bug. Obviously the drawing routines are making positioning assumptions that are not always accurate.

Changes to DPI settings can mess with a number of windows games, but there may be a way to address this. I will ask the developers if anything can be done to allow CoG to tolerate DPI changes.

Thanks. It would be nice to have a fix though obviously this is a lower priority item as it likely impacts very few people and there is an available workaround. Most games do not have this problem though. Clearly there is a way to prevent this from happening so if nothing else the team should take a lessen learned to apply to future endeavors.

Thanks for this report! I tried to test just for this particular issue (dpi settings) and I thought we passed it OK, but there may be something OS specific involved. Based on your snapshots (thanks for those) I'm fairly sure I know what the issue is and should be able to get a fix in with the first patch.

I hope the first patch will fix this. Seems like a great game but I can't get into it.
