New Player Questions..extremely confused

Just to let you guys know, the most advanced turn-based strategy game I've played so far is Axis and Allies. In fact, I purchased this game b/c I thought it'd basically be A&A with better research rules and more units. Boy was I wrong!

Ok, my questions are:

1). Does capturing territories automatically give you the resources listed for the territory? I tried this, and it seems that I don't get diddly squat for capturing territories, even if resources are listed. I tried repairing resource-things and such, and it still doesn't do anything.

2). Is it recommended that I repair everything I can safely hold onto?

3). How in the world is Germany supposed to hold on to the rest of Europe while still invading Russia successfully? This seems nearly impossible to me.

4). Should Japan go for Russia, after taking Asia?

5). Are the Soviet East Satellites (the countries surrounding Moscow, closer to China) even worth taking?

6). What will happen if I get negative production points and such?

7). If 1 resource + 1 factory point = 1 production point, how do I get more resources (this ties back to question #1)?

Im pretty new myself, but I'll give it a go :)

1. You gain control of the resource, but the caveat is that you need to repair it first, this uses 2 times five supplies.

2. Your supply is a scarce resource, you better invest in what you need. There's a difference between 'need to have' and 'nice to have'.

3. Well, Hitler didn't manage it either - it's basically a pre-emptive strike to break the Russian fighting machine before it really gets going.

4. Assuming they have nothing else to do, its an option. Against human opponents, you'll wanna limit how far you stretch Japan out though.

5. Not sure what you mean, worth taking compared to what? If they have factories and resources in them, then you can at least deny them to your opponent if you take the area.

6. You can't, the AI will stop the production of one or more of your units.

7. Repair the conquered ressources, they work from the turn after they have been repaired.

I can't tell you how many times I'll attack russia and have the WA player invade europe. the best method I've found to devote all your units into russia and still maintain control of europe is to play a less aggressive player. otherwises the WA will find a hole someplace and exploit it (at a minimum souther france is the spot they can always attack).

I've found the most consistant way to conquer russia completely is having japan attack also. china is fairly useless and invading russia not only gives resources, but drains russian troops away from defense against germany.

yes you need to repair everything before you get the benfit of using it. timing of repairs is important though. if you're certain you're going to lose the territory, its a waste to repair anything but the rail. also on occasions you might have plenty of resources and what you really need is factories close to the front to produce supplies. its all really a balancing act.

the soviet urals are probably the choicest factories. lots of factories and lots of resources. its very hard though to reach them. if you ever do get a chance to attack them, by all means go for it, it'll break the russians back.

negative production points simply delay one of the units in the queue an extra turn. its probably better in the end for you to decide which units are eventualy produced as opposed to letting the AI determine which one receives the delay.

1) Repairing them may not always be enough.
a) You must have enough factories to make use of the resources. Later in the game, factory multipliers kick in, but early on you may find that you have more resources than factories, so a capture doesn't give you any additional production. The excess resources just go into the resource pool.
b) The resources from the captured territory must be able to get to a factory somehow. If the area's surrounded or overseas without a transport network, the resources are isolated.
c) Notable for the western allies, it seems that if one region is isolated, its factories are limited to drawing on the resources within the region. Thus, although the resources for African territories may be available to India due to transports in the Indian ocean, if the Atlantic convoys have been sunk then England's factories can't get them. England will have few resources but many factories while India will have many resources but few factories. Thus your production will be much less than the simple total resources + total factories would indicate.

Also, the resources or factories that you repair aren't available until the turn after the turn in which you repair them.

2) Only if you need it. The two production points needed to repair something (via 10 supplies) could instead produce an infantry, artillery, fighter, transport, or flak, or 1/3rd of the research needed to improve a unit type, or 10 supplies. The mistake I made in my first game was conquering a lot of territory quickly and then spending all my supplies repairing things at the end of every turn. Because I left no supplies for my occupation forces, partisans quickly got out of control.

3) It's not easy, but possible. Be sure to keep reserves to counterattack any Western Allied beachheads. If you've sealed the Mediterranean at Gibraltar and Suez, it's much more manageable.

4,5) I had one fun game where the Japanese ran all through Siberia and linked up with the Germans in Persia. Russia was devastated. But Japan didn't attack Western Allied territory until Russia was firmly under control.

7) Resources are gained by conquering (and repairing and maintaining a transport network). Factories may be built or conquered and repaired. But in the long run, as the combatants' industries shift to total war production, the industrial multipliers make additional factories not really necessary.

Don't fret too much Jiggy, this game has a pretty steep initial learning curve. It soon becomes second nature to repair what you need and not what you would "like to have".

I usually only repair captured rail "one click". The Germans have more resources than production capability at start, so repairing captured resources isn't a good idea. The opposite is true for Japan.

As a general rule, I try not to attack any enemy territories that do not have resources/factories/significant stragic importance. I.E. alot of China's territory. Supplies are just too valuable.

I think you should just ignore certan provinces. Odessa is a prime example of a place you should just leave devastated and swarming with partisans, and unless you're using it to get to Leningrad, the Baltic States also. As Germany, your rail lines in the USSR are there to support the front. Rebuild no more than you need to get forces forwards (preferably through provinces with factories/resources so you don't waste troops guarding them as well).
