German Assault at Lodz

Post by robot »

Lodz Poland 9/10/39

I have been given command of the XV Grenadiers. We have detrained and are to move up and assault the Polish defenders at Lodz. I have under my command 3 companies of the finest infantry Germany has to offer plus 2 companies of tanks for support. The companies are as follows:

3 Platoons of Grenadiers W/ 1 atr, 1 mortar 50mm and 1 mmg 34 per platoon.
1 sec HMG
1 sec 37mm ATG
2 sec 150mm IG
1 sec 81mm Mortar
1 Fwd Observer
1 sec Skd 6/2 AA
1 Platoon of Engineers

We have also had the good fortune to get 2 companies of tanks consisting of 3 platoons each with 5 tanks per platoon.
1st company is made up of: 3 Pzk IIc and 2 Pzk IVc Per platoon.
2nd Company has 5 Pzk 38t per platoon.

As this will be an assualt thru heavy minefields no doubt, Hq has sent us 6 more platoons of Engineers. They will be assigned 2 platoons to each company. This is to expedite a speedy opening thru the mine field.

We have also been told that 3 batterys of 150mm artty has been assigned to each company. With luck we may have the help of 2 sec of stukas as well.

Our jump off time will be 0800 in the morning. It is a clear day with vis about 1300 yards. The opening barrage will last about 15 minutes primarialy on the mine fields in front of each company. The Engineers will have the toughest of all to start moving out first to clear the field for the troops to follow.

Spirits are high and the men are ready to go. Ammo has been issued and a good breakfast was eaten by all.

0810 Hours

Engineers began to move out at 0800 hours for all three companys. Co B lined up in the north section of map. They have about 300 yards across fairly flat and open land to the mine field. This sits about 150 yds to the north of town. There objective is near 350 yds East of the mine field. There is a small hill 100 yds east of there that runs 400 yds from se to nw.

Co C is lined up across a small road in the center of map. There is a gap of 500 yards between the companys. Both have about the same distance to reach the mine field. There objective is 50 yds south of town and 250 yds past the mine field. The two companys after taking there objectives are to swing north and south and take the town. The town is maybe 400 yards across consisting of maybe 25 buildings.

A company is on C companys right flank again 500 yds or so south of them near edge of map. They will have some forest cover before reaching the mine field. There objective is 350 yds east of mine field sitting on the rear of a small hill. This hill runs 400 yds SE to NW. It is open ground from the mine field to the foot of the hill.

It is ten minutes into the battle so far. Our 150 begun there bombardment on the suspected mine field in front of each company. All three Co. Engineers have begun there move towards the fields as well. C company in the middle has come under one heck of a barrage of 100mm shells and has already begun to slow down. I have given orders for there officers to push them and push them hard. So far the flanks have had nothing going on. They are progressing well.

The reports I get are encouraging. The men are still in high spirits and raring to take on the Poles as soon as the Engineers have opened a path thru.

All 3 companys have Engineers among the wire and have begun to dig up the mines.
C Co in the center has been under a terrific barrage for the last 20 minutes. They have at least 30 men lost so far. No loss to any equipment so far. The 100mm has been falling like rain on them. They are routing and have become very disoriented. The non coms and officers are working hard to restore order. The Engineers came under some small arms and mg bursts from alone bunker. It has been smoked and is quite at the moment. Thr enemy troops have been driven back by fire from there support tanks as well.

Both the flanks have been quite so far as the Engineers move into the mine field and begin there work. Hope to have troops thru the field within the next 20 minutes.

My special forces have begun to show up in the enemys back field. I hope there efforts will disrupt the rear and maybe pull some units from the front. They have taken over a small village of maybe 5 huts. They are 500 to 600 yards north west of the most northern rear objective. Recon has shown 3 small bunkers are sitting on the site. Have called down a barrage of 150mm on them before moving up to try and take them out. We are supposed to have a full company of special forces to try and take the rear objectives. So far only 1 full platoon has shown and 2 squads from another. They should start causing hell for the enemy with in the next half hour.

A company has broken thru and is moving the 3rd platoon into the field. The 2nd has moved up behind them and will follow as quick as they get thru. They have run into a few broken squads but they have been forced back with heavy loss of life. The support tanks have a good line of fire over there heads and have laid down a withering fire every time an enemy shows there self.

B company in the north has just now breached a 50 yd wide hole in the line. They too will soon be forcing there way into enemy territory.

C company in the center has not been able to open a lane. Thery are running into stiff resistance from the enemy there. Have been under constant bombardment and small arms fire. The officers have done a great job in pushing them to get a lane thru the mines.

The special forces in the enemy rear have come under fire from 2 37mm ATGs. The guns are straight ahead of them to the east on a small rise. Also 350 yards to there NE 2 small bunkers have opened fire on them with MGs. Have called down smoke on them and should arrive within a few minutes along with the 150 on the ATGs. They are only about 250 yards from there first objective. Two platoons from the company have arrived at the site and hope the rest show up soon.

I have given explicive orders that there is to be no heroics in this battle. I want the men to take there time and go slowly with caution. Better this way then to lose lives thru stupid moves. We must get moving and very soon before the 100mm depletes our force too much.

Some one messed up bad at head quarters today. We were to recieve 6 trucks or wagons to move our sig33 150 guns. Whoever forgot to get them i will personally have there head. The guns are now sitting on the top of several hills usless in this battle. The 37mm ATGs are trying to catch up to our lines but it is tough moving them even 50 yards at a time.

The special forces have begun to move. They decided not to wait for all the squads to show up. Have made it to with in 100 yards of the objective. While moving into position in behind the bunkers that sit on there target, they ran into 4 37mm ATGs and destroyed all of them. Began reciving fire from 2 more atg emplacements to the south and they are manuvering to take them out first before the bunkers. They called down a 150 barrage on the guns first before attempting to move on them.

Sent in the sec of stukas on the bunkers with little result. Although they managed to take out another hidden 37mm ATG concealed on the south side of the bunkers.

The north and south flanks of Engineers have opened at least a 100 yard wide lane thru there respective fields. The south flank has at least 2 platoons thru the wire and moving towards the south VH. Have met only token resistence so far. The north flank has begun to move there troops thru the wire as well, again only slight resistence being met as well.

C Co in the center not doing well at all. No breach thru the mine field as yet. I really cant blame them that much tho. After all its very hard and nerve racking to say the least. You cant probe for mines when you have to keep your head buried in the dirt, just to save your ass. The bombardment from the enemys guns has been horrific. They have taken the brunt of the shells falling. There casualties have been the highest of all 3 companys. If any of the Engineers for C Co make it thru today, I want a unit citation for them.

We will take all our objectives today. I have no doubt of that. But it is going to be at the cost of a lot of lives. Im going to be busy writing letters tonite.

Most of the time i save every turn because i have been kicked out of the game. Not often but it hurts after you have put in say 5 turns and the screen goes black and you lose those turns. The clock in my games changes every 5 minutes. In other words a turn equals 5 minutes time.

The battle im reporting on now has went on for 1 hour 25 minutes or 17 turns. Most of the time i will only play from 4 to 10 turns per day. My battles have the max units most of the time it takes a long time for me to do a turn usually. I go slow slow on my movement. Especially in the early stages before i break the enemy and force them into full rout.

I report each morning on the previous days work. And yes i do take notes during the day of what happens but I do remember a lot of what has gone on the previous day. Sometime i just write down a units designation and this helps me remember what happened.

This may help all of you in remembering what goes on in your different modes of play in this game. When i play i am there this is my friends being shot at and dying. I feel for them and i can smell the smoke feel the shock of the shells going off. Hear the whistle as a close one passes by. Hear the screaming and feel the pain as a bullet smacks your skin tearing a hole thru it. I really get pissed when the suppresion hits my men so bad they cant move. Then the shells pound them till they rout and it takes 2 to three turns to get them moving again.

But i ramble too much yes i take notes but mostly i take my time. I have fought a battle with the Japs where i moved them all one hex at a time for 37 turns. They took all the forward hexes never got to the rear ones. But they caused so much devastation to the enemy we got a disive victory. Now thats 200 units one hex each and every turn for 37 turns. Takes time but being retired and old thats mostly what i have time. That comes to 7400 moves if your interested.

Besides all that im a suppressed writer. [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Where the hell has the 5 squads of special forces gone too. They did understand it was Lodz we were assaulting. An hour and 25 minutes into the battle and still no sign of them. The troops that did show up are into a bad one. The enemy has taken some of the 100mm off of our front line troops and now pounding them for fare the well. Has slowed them down but not stopped them. They are within striking distance of there objectives. Already moved up and taken out the rear bunker of a total of 7 all clustered around the VH. They stand within 50 yards of the first flag. Only 3 squads moving at the present time. Suppresion from the latest bombardment runs rampant thru the others.

Well it had to happen when we started thru the mine field and began to move in ernest. A Co lost there first vehicle to a wiz 37. It took out a skd 6/2 AA with one shot. But one of our Pz IVc got even and blasted them to kingdom come, took 3 shots but what the heck. They have captured 2 of the four objectives so far. Have come under a lot of small arm fire as they crested the hill leading to the spot. The hill runs 400 yards long SE to NW. With the ground we need at the far SE corner of it. We control the southern western side and are moving over the top as i speak. Two platoons of engineers from A Co have swung NE towards C in the middle. They are within 400 yards of the center objective. Trying to force some of the troops holding the center up to counter this movement.

C Co has finally broken the mine field too. There Co has begun to move thru as well. I must say this in defense of all our Engineers today. It has not been easy to clear these fields. There was 2 lines of mines to cut thru under a horrific bombardment lasting for the last hour and 15 minutes. They have been cut to ribbons and yet continued to work and open a path thru. Some Iron crosses are due today.

I reported earlier that B Co in the north was thru the mines and it was in error. At the time I did not know about the double row of them.A 50 yard hole has been cut thru and troops are filing thru as we speak. They are still 350 yards from there objective. One thing tho they are facing slight resistence.

We have had some losses more then i like. At least 3 squads of Engineers have been wiped out. 2 squads of reguler infantry as well. An ATR and a HMG also. This is what I have had reported so far. Plus several squads cut down to less then half strength. Im sure there is more that hasnt been reported yet. Our losses before this is over will run into the hundreds im sure. Dam those 100mm guns. I wish they had them jammed where the sun dont shine and I could pull the lanyard.

Lodz Poland

A lot has gone on in the last 30 minutes. Our special forces took the rear most nothern objectives. In the process they took out 6 of the 7 bunkers. I left 1 platton thats 3 squads to guard the ground from retreating Poles. They have been stationed in and amongst the burned out hulks of the bunkers. Should make some what of a big surpprise for any running Poles who seek sanctuary there. Mean while 5 squads moved south about 500 yards to the southern objective. On the way there they took out 5 37mm ATGs. Right now they stand on the ground there supposed to be. Have begun to set up a perimeter around it hoping to catch some unsuspecting enemy fleeing from the western battle ground. Still no sight of at least 4 squads of men. Hope they didnt go to Lobz by mistake.

Mean while at the front things have been happening rather fast. A Co has taken there objective in the south. Although some units have crested the hill and begun there move towards the eastern slopes. It is not all well. The 100mm are still falling down on them. It seems to have slowed down in the last 20 minutes. But the damage has been done and they have begun to move at a snails pace. I was moving down there but decided against it. A 100 went off about 150 yards away and blew a hole thru one of my officers. Thought I might be able to help with the mens morale but not at the expense of my life. Decided to move up to the north flank instead.

C Co in the center has taken there objective as well. They have begun to enter the SW corner of the village. They wont get any help from A Co in the south due too there high rate of suppression.

B Co is thru the mine field and has approched to with in 200 yards of there objective. Have run into 3 bunkers dead in front of it. 2 have been taken out by there support tanks and 1 by the Engineers. It should be in our hands with in 20 minutes.

Had some reports that we lost 2 more squads of Engineers and 2 of reguler infantry. These are not confirmed as yet and hope its not really true. The reports im getting isnt good at all. Ive been told at least 20% of all the squads are down to less then 5 men left. And at least 85% have lost from 1 to 3 men. I dont know if this includes the wounded are just the dead.

Have moved the 3 platoons of Pz 38t thru the mines and up to the front lines. With there 2 mounted mg it should cut the remaining poles down. Actually the only armor we have seen are the wiz 37mm atg. Have taken out at least 5 of them i think. We have been lucky so far losing only the 6/2 AA and one Pz IVc being immobilized.

This battle will be over by 1020 hours you have my word on it. With the complete rout of the Polish army and there destruction.

Lodz Poland

1020 Hours

The battle is over. The poles have run off with there tails between there legs. It is a decisive victory for us. It cost us in human lives tho. Friends are gone forever. Casualties as follows.

Men 397 they lost 2124
Artty 1 they lost 34
AFV they lost 7 these were of the wiz 37 type.

We lost 6 full squads of the lend lease Engineers mostly due to the 100mm bombardment. Some were also killed in the mine fields. A total of 8 in all what with one squad each from A and C co. It was tough to be an Engineer today. Also lost 2 50mm mortars, a MMG and a ATR crew.
Again from those dam 100mm.

I know i made the statment that this battle would end in the next 20 minutes but it took 25. This was due too the fact that B Co ran into at least 9 squads making a Custer last stand in the north.
They were in the north east section of town 100 yards behind the last objectives just in front of a small hill. They put up a ferocius stand to say the least. Pushed some troops up from C Co in the center moving NE thru town. This forced them out into the open there. Then brought 2 platoons of tanks around there SE side to the north and surrounded them. The tanks sat up on the slopes of the hill behind them and cut down every man. I know this was cruel and inhumane thing to do. I sent men in twice and both times they refused my terms of surrender. Nothing else i could do under the circumstances.

Yes the battle is over but the war is not. We have been ordered to the rear to repair and wait for replacements. May also get some new updates to our equipment. Heard we might get 3 new Pz IIIe to replace some of the Pz 38t we have. The men will need the time to heal from this ordeal as well. Rumors are we will be sent to just outside Krakow next month. Heard the X SS Panzer is moving into position there this month. My old friend from our school days Kurt Vogel commands them. He is a fine officer and I wish him well.

Almost forgot want to thank our troops from the special forces. They did an excellent job and held there ground as the poles retreated to the rear. In the process they took out at least 7 squads of the enemy. These men im sure would have sat up positions and ambushed our troops as they approached the rear objectives. Im sure they saved a lot of lives.
