Which one are you talking about. Each of two letter abbreviations are the Terrain in the hex (use '1' key to turn on/off). For example first Capital is land/coastal/ocean. Second letter woods, shallow water(w), deep water (a). There is a list that I got here at the forum.

Code Meaning
---- -------
Oa Deep ocean
Ow Shallow ocean

Cc Coast - clear (or cultivated)
Cw Coast - forest (or woods)
Cm Coast - mountains
Cd Coast - desert
Ca Coast - atoll
Cu Coast - urban
Cs Coast - swamp

Lc Land - clear (or cultivated)
Lw Land - forest
Lm Land - mountains
Ld Land - desert
Lu Land - urban
Ls Land - swamp

Those are terrain codes, it tells you what terrain there is in each hex. The hotkey is 1, you must have accidentally pressed it.

Edit: medicff was faster - and more thorough
