Game crashing

Post by adv dp fan »

Just bought this yesterday. Loaded it and had the ATI graphics problems right away. Discovered the forums and tried the fix posted at the top and that worked fine. Now I can get through the first turn as the Germans but when it starts up the first battle in the Japanese move the game freezes and the "this program has a problem and must be closed" dialog pops up and down it goes. Sometimes it gets past the Japanese move and dies in the Western Allies move but never gets past that. Tried all versions of the game, same thing. I've noticed that my physical memory hits max right before the game freezes and my swap memory is over a gig, hitting the HDD hard. I assume there is some memory overflow issue. Any suggestions? I REALLY want to play this game.

My setup:
Windows XP Pro
Dual AMD Athlons (2.0 GHz)
1 gig RAM
ATI All-in-Wonder 9600xt with CAT 5.6
SB Audigy 2 ZS (Driver ver 5.12.0001.0444)
Passes all tests just fine in DxDiag

Please post your dxdiag report. Tech support will want to look at your driver info and codec info. Also, you can email your info to support@matrixgames.com.

Ok here is the dxdiag.

I'll email support too as you suggest. I really like what I've seen of the game so far but I've never had to work so hard to get a game to run before. Take that back, never did get Black & White to run on any of my systems.

Anyway, looking forward to figuring this out.

Yes, noticed it was up here and tried it out too. Tried the original install and 1.033 as well. Only version I haven't tried is 1.016.

Help! Someone Please! I've posted here and sent emails about this but beyond being asked for a dxdiag file which I send and posted I've heard nothing. All my drivers are updated, everything else seems fine but the game crashes during the AI move. I'm at a loss and I so very much want to play this game. ANY ideas at all from any one??

Hi, apologies for missing your earlier reply. I would do the following and see if it helps:

1. You have a lot of extra codecs installed. Try uninstalling any codec packs you have previously installed or had installed on your computer.
2. Update your VIA Chipset drivers (look for the latest integrated VIA Hyperion chipset driver package)
3. Make sure any video settings are set to the default (i.e. no forced anti-aliasing or filtering, etc.)
4. If you have any doubts about clearing out previous drivers completely, uninstall all video drivers, run Driver Cleaner Pro again and then update to the latest Catalyst 5.6
5. Try the Omega Drivers to see if they make any difference.
6. Check for updated Audigy 2 drivers - the Audigy 2 has had some problems in previous driver revisions with GGWaW.
7. Make sure you close down all background applications before running GGWaW. Utilities such as EndItAll can help with this if you're not sure what to close or if anything extra is running.

Let me know if any of those ideas help, thank you for your patience.

Regards,

Thanks. I've been out of town on business but I'll try looking into some of these when I get home. Already tried several of the suggestions but not all yet. Not sure what that Stream Switcher is but I'll see about removing it if it is there. I really want to enjoy this game.

I would have replied earlier but I've been busy playing the game. YAY! [:)]

Not sure why I had that installed but I uninstalled it and the game plays fine now.

Thanks!!

Now to work on my tactics. [;)]

You should look into getting newer sound and graphics drivers for your sound and graphics boards. You can also rename the sound folder and see if that helps (which would indicate you have a problem with the soundboard/driver setup). Since you have an ATI card, it sounds like you need to cleanse your old drivers and then install the latest Catalyst drivers, however, I'm not a tech guy so I can't help you with any specifics. Hopefully someone else can help you on this (there may also be a thread you can find on ATI problems that might give some details). I know the Matrix tech guys have all been away at the Origins convention this past weekend, but hopefully they'll be able to answer your questions this week if you can't get past these problems. You can also email your Dxdiag to support@matrixgames.com. Good luck.

Thanks Joel for the reply. I'll e-mail tech support since unfortunately I have no idea how to update or cleanse drivers. If anyone on this thread can give me step-by-step directions, I'd appreciate it!
