It wasn't until later that I remembered I was the Japanese and that we neither retreat nor surrender. Had it been an Allied unit the jig would probably have been up.

Exactly, had I attacked my disorganization and fatigue would have gone up as well and there was no hope of causing a retreat or surrender.

I knew there were other Divisions afloat out there somewhere and were he to land a division the next or same turn, boom say goodbye to Luzon. Better to play it safe than lose just trying to kill a few extra squads. Had there been some hope of causing the units to surrender, then perhaps I would have taken the chance, but the PI is far weaker in CHS than it is in standard WitP, so caution won out at Naga.

Now I know this flies in the face of the aggressive move I made at Lingayan, but beer o’clock is and will remain my only defense on that move.[8|]

Allied Patrol Craft drop depth charges on I-158 just west of the Sunda straight. The sub was reported hit, but the severity of the damage caused is unknown.

Japanese troops land on the unoccupied base of Jolo Island, the base is expected to fall next turn.

Another Japanese air attack on Singapore this turn. The raid destroyed a few planes and caused light damage to the facilities there.

In my other (standard WitP) PBEM game, my opponent was able to close the airfield permanently with a single air strike of this size. I like the reduced effect with the changed bomb loads in CHS, closing an air base has more of a campaign feel to it. Too bad Matrix can’t simply reduce the effect air strikes have rather than forcing non-historical bomb loads to be implemented in order to get the desired (more realistic) results.

Japanese Kates jump an already stricken AP east of Morotai landing 7 bombs into the tough ship. After sustaining multiple air attacks since the outbreak of war, the resilient President Harrison soldiers on making some small headway at its current best speed of 1 knot. Heavy fire and float damage sustained after this last attack will probably spell the ships doom.

Several allied air attacks on the Japanese shipping at Kuantan fail to score any hits as large Japanese combat air patrols break up the strikes. Many allied aircraft are damaged or destroyed in the attempted strikes.

Allied fortress troops repulse Japans assault on Georgetown, though Japanese engineers manage to reduce the fortifications significantly. The base is expected to fall next turn.

Japanese amphibious troops capture Kuantan and force the base force to retreat west onto the rail line. Heavier allied units had been evacuated by sea prior to the landings to help bolster the defense of Singapore.

Wirraways flying out of Rabaul sink a Japanese MSW that was escorting a small transport ship. The small task force is headed southeast into the “slot”, possibly to land at another unoccupied base there.

These damn planes have been the biggest pain in the arse for me. The other problem is....short of bringing in CV's there are no existing airbases to speak of in an around Rabaul from which to provide aircover. Practically everything needs to be built from the ground up. I know Jim would just love for me to waste KB striking Rabaul, but they have bigger fish to fry.

On the aircraft bombloads, i did not make any loads ahistorically small for the sake of the system.

More or less our main design goal was to create a more historical game rather than the scn 15 Matrix gave us.

So the low bomb loads on planes like the KI-48 are accurate; several people will post that a KI-48 could carry 1764lbs of bombs as a max load but that is not really correct. The Ki-48 only carried that large of a load as a Kamikaze with less fuel, only 2 crew and 1 defensive MG.

I am actually thinking about lowering American heavy bombers a bit more, I have found virtually no cases where they carried the huge manufacturer listed bombloads.

The B29 was listed as 20,000lbs but it could only lift that with a reduced crew, all but two defensive guns removed and with a max altitude of 15,000ft.

A Japanese surface group sails into Brunei in northeast Borneo and catches a small AK loading supplies sending it to the bottom.

Japanese sub I-153 puts a torpedo into the tanker Ven-Koh northwest of the Sunda straight. Japan is finding ripe pickings in and around these straights.

Japan conducts multiple air strikes on Singapore destroying many allied aircraft on the ground and causing heavy damage to the base. Although Japan encounters no air opposition over the base, allied AAA fire proves very effective destroying and damaging several low flying Lilys and damaging many of the higher altitude Nells.

50 Betty bombers strike Manila causing light damage to the base. No allied fighter rose to oppose the raid.

Rabaul Wirraways again make themselves felt by landing a 250 lb bomb into Japanese AK Tokiwa Maru near Kavieng. With results like these occurring every day, Japan is being subjected to the allied ‘death by a thousand cuts’ strategy. Many small but painful cuts administered all over the body can prove just as deadly as a single sword stoke through the heart, it just takes longer and hurts a lot more. [:D][:D][:D]

Japanese Idas strafe Manila harbor causing heavy damage to two PT boats.

Japanese sub I-156 puts 3 torpedoes into the tanker Sloi northwest of the Sunda straights. Although the replay showed the tanker as sinking, it was still afloat during my orders phase. I hope we haven’t lapsed into a sync problem again, we have been using Japans Combat reports file every turn so if we have, we may have a serious problem. Hopefully it’s just fog of war.

For a ship having been reported to have taken 3 torpedoes and then sinking, the Sloi is in remarkably good shape. My guess is the skipper of the sub miss-reported the hits and sinking and the ship only took 1 torpedo, I hope it’s not a sync problem.

IMO I'm going to die anyway...so let's at least make it interesting. Plus it makes for a great read in the papers back in Brisbane.

Well I managed to confirm we are still getting the out of sync issues this turn. I overwrite the combat reports .txt file each turn with the Japanese one that Treespider sends me, so obviously this doesn’t fix the sync issues. This turn I witnessed a CV strike hit my CA Houston, but that attack never even occurred. Good news this time, but I’m waiting for the turn where my ships come up missing or damaged and I have no idea what caused it.

Anyway here’s what I think happened this turn:

Japanese ships bombard Butuan and Brunei causing light damage to both. Kuching is also bombarded and the coastal guns there landed a single hit on a Japanese DD. Damage to the facilities were light.

Both Johore Bahru and Singapore airfields are struck by Japanese air strikes. The tide has turned in Malaya and Japan has won air superiority. Allied planes are beginning to pull out in the face of repeated punishing attacks.

Zeros continue their sweeps of Amboina.

Wirraways from Rabaul slam the Japanese AK Shoko Maru with a bomb this turn.

Japanese dive bombers and fighters pounce the allied AK Siantar in Manila harbor and land 8 shell hits and 4 bombs into the freighter as it tries to off-load supplies into the port. Having achieved air superiority in Luzon as well, no allied fighter air cover was available to defend the stricken ship.

Japanese ground troops continue their bombardment campaign at Naga causing very light damage.

Allied spotter aircraft on Borneo have sighted several Japanese surface groups converging on the large island from several directions. It appears Japan is going to coordinate several landings at once to try and dilute the effect of allied air strength in the area. Here's a heavily censored image of the Borneo area:

Had the very same thing happen in every PBEM I've played (as Allied). The Allied player get's frustrated because it is his replay which is always true or false...the IJN replay is the master. The problem is widespread.

Japanese naval forces bombard Miri causing very light damage. A battleship squadron bombards Kuching causing moderate damage there.

Japanese troops land at Sorong and Kuching. Later in the turn Japanese troops also landed at Butuan and Nauru Island.

Japanese sub I-162 puts 2 torpedoes into the tanker George G Henry just south of Balikpapan and sends it and its precious cargo of oil to the bottom.

Two large Japanese air raids strike Johore Bahru in Malaya causing moderate overall damage.

A very large unescorted Japanese air raid hits Rabaul, but the now veteran Wirraway pilots rise to meet the bombers and break up the formation. Although no bombers were shot down, many were damaged and the raid caused very little damage.

Japanese surface units are detected northeast of Palembang at the little island of Singkep, Japan pays the price for bringing naval units so close to allied land based air and the CL Sendai gets an 18 inch torpedo smacked into its mid section.

Several other allied strikes fail to locate the ships due to inclement weather and still more miss completely. With overcast weather predicted for tomorrow, better results are to be expected should the Japanese remain in the area.
