Tactical battles

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Tactical battles

Post by goodwoodrw »

What I like about Tact battles, is there are no victory hexes so to speak. and you can look around and decide where fight in most cases, however in a recent battle, I was out numbered 41000 (with no supply waggons) to about 65000, I took up a defensive position flanked on one side by a river, and a village where I placed my infantry. No arty and placed the cav on the non river flank. I wasn't in aposition to attack so i waited for the Ruskies to come, I waited 4 days nothing happened. The time went to the 4th day I decided to retreat. 2 things I thought battles ended after 4 days and 2 all my units routed to the bottom of the map past the enemy. the top of the map was the shortest route. any comments

I've played a battle as Austria where I had about 70000 troops and my Russian 'ally' had over 100000 against almost 200000 French. In the entire battle the Russians never moved or engaged at all. Needless to say, my army was slaughtered. I should have watched to see what became of the Russians after my army was annihilated, but the battle had gone on for far too long to get to that point so I just CAD'ed out of it and ended the game.

I'm guessing there is a freeze bug somewhere in there. I'm not sure if its just coincidence or not on whether its the Russian AI or not.

I believe Eric said there is a chance the AI will go into a defensive posture but that it isn't happening as often as it should. When you say the Russians didn't move - do you mean that LITERALLY that every unit stayed in the position where it was first placed or did they assume a defensive position? It sounds as if you mean the former and if so, then that would certainly be a bug. I would love for you to mean the latter as that is the behavior I think should occur with far greater regularity.

For my part, I mean never moved. I only saw parts of their army (we started pretty far apart), but the divisions I saw never moved a hex, never deployed out of column etc. They were all sitting exactly as they were when they deployed.

They do enter defensive postures but this is the first report of an AI controlled ally totally freezing in detailed combat.

The morale of the attacker should be deteriorating constantly in detailed battle, but 4 days is a long time without a break. I'll look into increasing the rate of decay.

In my battle, I *think* we were defending. We were in Styria at least (as Austria/Russia).
