PBEM Problem

Post by pike-6 »

After setting up a PBEM game and emailing the five(5) savea files to the other player, that player is unable to load the game. What I've noticed as the game is saved on my end is a quick message "saving C:\savea. On the other side my opponent gets a meassage "unable to open data file". The save game files are being saved into the Pacwar directory. The playback of savea on the VCR seems to be working fine, but not the actual game. Any ideas?

Did you send over the following files with it?

Savea
Savea.md
Savea.cd

You need all of these files to run a saved game.

I'm noticing 6 files saved in a pbem game:

savex
savex.cd
savex.dat
savex.md
savex.rd
savex.vcr

Anyone have any definitive info about what is supposed to happen...are all files required...???

Hmmm, I'm not seeing the savex.dat file mentioned for PBEM games. There is a Report.cbt file generated, but I'm pretty sure it's not needed. I'm testing it, but I think the only files needed are:

savex
savex.cd
savex.md
savex.vcr
savex.rd

The Japanese player needs to e-mail all 5 files, the Allied player only needs to e-mail the first 3.

Regarding Pike-6's problem, the only possible problem I can see is if you don't select PBEM mode in the player selection menu, the PBEM game won't load. So far, I haven't seen any problems.

Hello...

The savex.vcr (Video Tape Recorder) and savex.rd (Recorder Data) files are the files required by the secure PBEM VCR player. They are new files, that we added.

Ok, somehow I've not been clear. The PBEM game dosn't want to play. See orginal post. It errors with a message about being unable to open a some unspecified dat file. The interesting post from today is that someone (Richard (?)) seems to have seen a file entitled savex.dat. This is a file that I have not seen created when I try the PBEM operation. Is there such a file? And the follow on question; how many files should the Japanese player be sending to start the PBEM game?

I may have uncovered the PBEM problem some people have been experiencing. After receiving PBEM files from 'Pike-6' it appears that two of the files were corrupted during transfer in strange ways. The savex.rd file showed up with no name, and the savex file was renamed savex.dat! The mysterious .dat file surfaces. Well, I couldn't start the PBEM game with these files.

The fix (I believe) is to make sure you zip all transferred game files, as some e-mail software (not all, mine is MS Outlook 2000) appears to regularly corrupt unzipped pacwar game files (I don't know why). I have had no trouble with zipped files.

Rich
