Ultimatums

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Ultimatums

Ultimati? Ultimata? [&:]

Anyway, has anyone ever seen a nation back down from an ultimatum? Whenever I issue one, no matter how strong I am and how feeble they are, they always choose to go to war rather than just remove their one little unit, or whatever has strayed into my territory. Has anyone had any different experiences?

Yes, they always back off and remove their troops, but only to come back with another division. But mainly to cross my territories.

Ok, so that's one for 'always back down' and one for 'never back down'.

Anyone else? [:)]

I have had both happen, but you gotta remember if they are under enforced peace then they HAVE TO withdraw, so I am not sure how often they are just scared of me.

I have registered as a bug some of the war decisions made this way - the AI can be goaded into declaring war on you when it is just plain silly for them to do so. I dunno if that has been fixed or not - I haven't noticed the bad behaviour for several releases.

The other thing that isn't clear is what the other nation's decision is. In other words, when you click on the 'Send Ultimatum' button, you should immediately see a result box telling you that 'X has declared war' or 'X has failed to remove their troops so you are now at war' or even 'X has removed their troops'. Or a similar, impossible to miss notification appearing at the start of the next month. As it is, I either find myself attacked or I have to go into the Relations screen to find out how they've responded to my ultimatum - I'm not even sure if it comes up on the event list. [&:]

Or am I just missing something obvious here?

Most times I have used it, it will then show the bad guys running for home, if it doesn't, then I know the side just went to war with me

I think there is also a bug in it, if you pick, declare war, nothing happens, the next turn, you are still at peace with that side

Good. I thought it was just me missing something. If there is a war declaration then we should see it on the screen. If Reg and I have both missed it then it needs to be more prominent.

Like Ralegh, I've seen both, but am not sure if the backing down is because they're scared or under enforced peace.

It uses the same "should I go to war with X" routine that it uses when it makes a regular DOW...(or should be doing this...)
