Trip to Guadalcanal

Now we walk maybe a third of a mile thru grass taller than myself on a trail no wider than a foot too the Japanese observation post on Mt Austen. If you look hard, there I am.

The view from the OP. Ahhhh, this guy could see everything the Americans did on land, water and in the air.

It is believed that he called in Pistol Pete Arty fire onto Henderson Field. Also, using his powerfull naval radio, was talking to Haruna and Kongo the night of The Bombardment (Oct 13/14), walking their fire onto Henderson.

Do you mean this is the spot where the fall of shot from nightime bombardments of Henderson was adjusted? All the way on Mt Austen? Or was it just land-based IJN artillery he was spotting for?

Can't seem to find it, but I thought I had a wide shot(it would be similar to the shot from the Japanese Memorial)looking out onto the water. He could see from Cape Esperance to East of Lunga Point. The view was just amazing! Any and all Allied ship movement would be reported back to Rabaul.

Hey...as the Japanese player in current PBEM, I want some "coast watchers" on Guadalcanal!

I was told that there was a IJN naval officer with very powerfull radios here and that yes, he called in naval gunfire onto Henderson. With some flares dropped by float planes, Henderson would be perfectly visible from this location at night.

My uncle, who was on Adm. Burke's flagship USS Charles Ausburne, made a similar trip a few years ago. He said the people there showed a great deal of gratitude. Unfortunately, he got sick during the trip and had to leave...
