No pre-PBEM release?

Post by macgregor »

I was hoping there would be a release of the game pre-PBEM thinking it wouldn't hinder the PBEM version release. I'm afraid that's not going to happen. I'm sorry to all you PBEM guys out there. I'm going to leave this forum to you guys as it's now in your hands. I realize alot of changes were necesary from CWiF. All I can say is good luck and godpeed!

Since Matrix won't announce it I've decided to announce it for them. WiF fans will have to wait for some sort of PBEM version of WiF to be laboriously developed(which we'll have to pay for mind you) if we want to be able to play our beloved game online.Thank you Matrix! That's all I needed to know.

It was announced from the beginning that MWIF would have PBEM support. I was unaware that there had ever been an announcement that MWIF wouldn't have PBEM support.

Game Features

· Faithful adaptation of the latest Deluxe version of World In Flames
· Network play
· Play by Email support
· Intelligent computer opponent
· Many optional rules and game system enhancements

Aye! You are indeed correct. Though I'm not sure that was the case when Chris started.

Of course not, but then again, this is not CWiF but MWiF. In the end it was pretty clear that the project programmed by Chris was doomed (no fault of his as he did marvelous work).

Considering how we'll have to wait a while yet for MWiF to be published I have no problem with the current project to integrate PBEM as it will be useful for many players. The same applies to the AI (which I also won't need myself but many others will wish, particularly for new players).

I would like to let you know that CWIF contains over 108,000 lines of Pascal code. It will form the core of MWIF. For example, I have just finished transferring all the map data (terrain, hexsides, and labels) to CSV files and expect to do the same for the 6000 units next. I definitiely did not want to key in all 1193 named locations on the map anew. Though some parts of CWIF's overall structure will change, and we are going for improved graphics on the screen, the detailed work regarding what moves are legal, combat, supply, and production will mostly stay the same. In gross terms I would make a rough guess about 20,000 lines removed and an addition of 40,000 lines. Therefore I would not consider CWIF 'doomed' but rather undergoing improvements to bring it up to date (10 years since its inception).

Chris is still very heavily involved helping me on MWIF. He and I average more than 2 emails per day and he is following all the stuff that appears in these forum threads. We all owe him our gratitude for what he has accomplished and continues to do.
