RE: Level bombers mining!
Size 6 semas the size limit, at anyrate I can lay mines in a game I have going whear I am allies from a size 6 airbase.
I dont know enough about the allied mines to able to say wheather or not a Twine engined allied type could lay them, their size may be a limiting factor, maybe only the 4 engine bombers could cary them or did so.

RE: Level bombers mining!
If it were only 4 engine planes that could air mine, how many plane types are there? B-17, B-29, 2 model of British planes I can't recall atm... Not too many plane types would be usable for the task, further limiting the usefullness of air-mining. Level 9 airfield sounds a bit high to me, but I haven't even gotten that far into the war...[:D]
Of course now that I had to reinitialize my HD, it looks like I'm going to have to start a whole new game.../sigh and no I couldn't save my game files...it just didn't work out. [:@]

Yamato, IMO the best looking Battleship.

Also various models of B-24, LB-30, navy version of B-24 - lots of Allied planes. No Japanese 4 engine bombers in the regular game, iirc (unless you count float planes as bombers...)
EDIT - i was assuming that the prior post that NO MEDIUM BOMBERS could mine was correct when i made my comment... Looks like i need to look at the rule book again...[8|]

I believe the rule is that you need level bombers. That would be B-25's, Sallies, Nells, B-29's, whatever.
I don't think tactical bombers can lay mines in the game.
I'm also not sure what size airfield and/or port is needed to fly the missions. I think I remember reading in a post that you need a size 9 port to lay mines with air groups. If that's the case, then you're really limited on air mining.
So Speedy's statement is not correct? B-25s CAN lay mines? When is a 2-engine level bomber considered "tactical"? Hudsons? Blenheims? B-26s? etc.
When I wrote that, I was thinking single engined planes were tactical, and 2 or more engines were LBA.
Also, the mines have a load factor, so it's possible to have a 2 engined plane that can't carry the mine. I would also assume that the larger your load on the aircraft, the more mines you lay. If B-29's can't lay a dozen mines apiece, then the game is shafting the allies. It's probably shafting the Japanese as well, but not as much, since their planes capacities are almost always less than the allies.
I have never tried to use mines in my games, because I play the AI and it's easy enough to beat the AI without mines. But, what I've posted is from what I've read in the manual and on this forum. (except my assumption about how many mines are laid with each plane)
The older I get, the better I was.
RE: Level bombers mining!
Oh yeah, forgot about the B-24...Your right the Japanese had no 4 engine planes cept for float planes. Only that one prototype 4 engine bomber sitting in Japan...

RE: Level bombers mining!
How can anyone actually test how many mines are laid per plane? You can only see the number of mines in friendly port hexes. (as far as I know).
When you see the mine symbol in an open hex, it could be 1 mine or 1,000,000. right?
I think this would be a question for a tester or dev.

You can test in head to head mode (or play AI, then switch to head to head), or make a test scenario...

No, I don't think this works. You can only see FRIENDLY mines if they are located at a FRIENDLY base. All unfriendly mines are quantity unknown, even if located at a friendly base. Unless there's something I don't know.
I suppose you can test this by laying mines at a friendly port. If the system will let you target a friendly port.

RE: Level bombers mining!
I haven't got my copy of Naval Weapons here (it's 1500 miles away, in Austin) but I got this
250lb Mk XI Aerial Depth Charge
Mk. I-IV - 1,500lb and 1,850lb
First introduced for Bomber Command Operations in April 1940, the Mk. I - IV was sturdily built and designed to withstand drops from aircraft flying at 200 mph at altitudes varying from 100 to 15,000ft. Containing approximately 750lb of explosives the mine could be detonated using various triggering devices depending on the application required. The type along with the Mk. V and VII became the standard mine used by the Command until being replaced by the Mk. VI in 1944.
Mk. V - 1,000lb
Introduced into service sometime during 1940-41 this mine was a smaller version of the Mk. I-IV. Containing between 625lb and 675lb of explosives this mine was usually detonated using magnetic triggers, although it could be configured to use our triggering devices.
Mk. VI - 2,000lb
A similar mine to the of the Mk. I-IV in that it could be configured in various ways to dentate. This mine differed only in that it contained 2,000lb of explosives in comparison to the 750lb of the Mk. I-IV.
Mk. VII - 1,000lb
Introduced in 1944, the Mk.VII was an improved version on the Mk.V although no increase in the size of explosive charge was made.
from this Bombs Weapons Rockets Aircraft Ordnance website. Unless these required specialised shackles (which don't appear in the photographs) any hard point rated for the appropriate weight shouldpermit their carriage. So the Mark XI ought to be possible by almost all the allied aircraft in the game and many should have the capacity for the Mk V and Mk VII.
Apparently mining via carrier aircraft was fiarly common towards the end. DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY -- NAVAL HISTORICAL CENTER

Don't think the game allows mining friendly bases from the air, but haven't gotten as far as that in my game. Certainly, earlier in the game only ENEMY cities show up as options for city attack.
However, i think you can get a pretty good idea of how many mines are present using Head to Head - conduct the mission once (Allies, say) and then have IJN MSWs go out and sweep. They usually say when a mine is destroyed. You might be able to get a notion as to how many mines are there - esp. if you use 1 ac, and find only 1 mine to sweep up.

Another way you could get at this through head-to-head is to mine a base you are about to take - and then you could get the mine count the next turn when you take it (i think).
RE: Level bombers mining!
Hello...
Any level bomber at a base size 6 or greater with sufficient supply can drop mines.
if(japanese bomber) mine type = 122
else
mine type = 130
Number of mines dropped = gAircraft[bomber type].maxLoad/gDevice[mine type].loadCost
Hope this Helps...

Can someone please tell me how I can figure out how many mines my level bombers can carry? And what type of mine? Allied, Japanese?
Thanks

Huh, so they can carry more mines than 1 ?? Great !! Now I just need to get some B-29s...[8D]
