General Officer Promotions?

Spent last weekend visiting my Dad, who's recently purchased CoG...unfortunately I'm flat broke until next Friday (monthly paychecks...) so I'm having to wait a week to purchase. Question regarding the General Officers: watching my Dad play the first turn of a 1796 game, I noticed a few French generals, who eventually became Field Marshalls (example: Bernadotte). My Dad said he'd checked the rules and found nothing indicating how or if these division and/or corps commanders were promoted in the game. Are these GO's automatically upgraded, do they slowly gain experience, does the player have to manually upgrade them, or do they not advance in the game at all?

They don't advance within a scenario. Sometimes we promote them from scenario to scenario. The files for generals are moddable, however, so I suppose you could save the game, open the file, adjust the rank, save the file, and then restart the game, though I admit I haven't done this myself. The file is described on another thread somewhere, I forget where. It might be nice to make this a feature, but I'm not sure if it will happen or not.
