How the AI Snookered Me!

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

How the AI Snookered Me!

Post by Hanal »

I have been playing Sweden for a number of games now as I hone my skills and understanding of the game. I am discovering that playing a country with limited objectives as Sweden has, still presents new challenges in each game....

Case in point, in previous games my war with the Danes had different results, some good and bad for me. In my last game however as I was fighting the Danes, I formed an Alliance with Russia. So what do the Danes do? After I capture Copenhagen, they ask for, and receive, protectorate status from my new friends, the Russians! If I want to advance further, I will have to break my Alliance with the Russians which I am not prepared to do. This is the first time I encountered this and it surprised the hell out of me. So there is quite a bit of replayability here and I have not even tried the major countries yet!

Well done!

Hi, That appears to be in violation of rules for Protectorates. A country that is asked to become Protector must be able to go to war with country attacking minor state. If Sweden was Allied with Russia before Denmark requested Russian protection that is wrong because Russia could not go to war to protect Denmark. I think this needs a bug report.

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

You are right, I had forgotten that fact, and I was indeed allied to Russia, so I was still snookered but not for the right reasons...[:)]...I'll report it..........

Very interesting! Although a bug, it's not necessarily a bad one I guess.

How do you capture a screenshot? Print screen, or a certain key?

Funny, Danes wanted to be your friend's friends so as to be your friends too.

I have certainly had countries become a protectorate of my ally, and hence my war lapsing. Very annoying - makes you want to reconsider the alliance!

Mogami, why do you think this should be prohibited? It seems reasonable to me. Am I missing something?

By the way, if I can move off the topic for a moment, if you look at the screenshot, what is that turd like symbol that occassionally attaches itself to fleets? (note my Swedish fleet)...back on topic, Mogami was pointing out the rules violation (6.3) which is why it should be prohibited....

I believe that is the top of the 'anchor' that makes up the Fleet symbol. I thought it was a cigar or something at first. [;)]

I would think it is reasonable, but should break the alliance (with the cost in glory). I mean, they are declaring their support for a known enemy of their ally...

Right, but if I break the alliance, and continue my war agianst the Danes, I will also be at war with Russia, which Sweden could not handle, especially if Russian troops move in through Finland....keep in mind, I thought it was a cool move which prompted the post in the first place, and had it been Prussia or Austria that was the protector, which I am not allied too, then there would be no issue. The question now raised is if this was the designer's intent, because as has been stated, a country cannot ask for protectorate status to a country that cannot attack the agressor nation. At least that is how I think the rule in 6.3 reads.................

CTRL+PrtScn then open MS Paint and paste the image in. Remember to save it as a jpeg if you are going to upload it to this baord.

I'm not sure of the exact sequence of events, but this looks to me like the "multi-province country conquest" bug.

The only thing the Danes should have done when you took Copenhagen is to surrender to you immediately.

Well, I agree with you that according to what is in the rules, this does not seem to be the intent. As a separate issue though, I think that it SHOULD be allowed, with a loss of glory to Russia for breaking the alliance (I agree that as currently engineered, it is you who are breaking the alliance, and I think that is unfair). I realize that it would in all likelyhood mean the end of the war against the Danes, but it would reflect pressure placed on a weaker ally by a stronger one.

And I do agree that it was a cool move, though in an all human game, Russia would have a LOT to answer for...

[:D]

I always thought it was supposed to be a spar or yardarm, but now that you mention it.....

Now if there was only electronic scratch-n-sniff technology, we could get the aroma of 18th century naval warfare too.
