Beer made me do it.

Post by mogami »

Hi, One night at Origins sitting in Tabpubs room drinking beer I said "I can take San Fransisco"
If he agrees the AAR will be posted here.
This is not a serious game of WITP in that the sole objective is the capture of San Fransisco by Japan.
I have till I concede failure, take SF or the date reaches May 1942. (However if 300k Japanese troops are in supply and sieging SF in May I think we should continue)

It required more time to do this turn 1 then it does for normal turn 1.

It is a good thing it wasn't two nights of beer. Or you would be trying to capture the whole west coast.

You might try this in pry's scenario 30 (15 mod). There are some West Coast air units added that were there just to prevent such a thing...

Hi, Sorry I am not doing this turn again. (He has enough air units since he knows not to send them away. We already will see strangeness as units already in Pacific are sent back to USA.

Hi, Don't worry he will spend all his time trying to stop me giving you a chance. He is going to start drinking JD while trying to stop me and will not be alert so you should be able to snag him once or twice.

Hi Russ,

Why choosing SF ? I would rather target LA, so after the war the evil guys in the war films won't be Japanese....

US invasion is very hard in WITP but if your opponent is preparing for it, I can't see any chance of success. In a normal game, where nobody is excepting you here, i would land in Alaska with 2 divs, that should divert some group troops to there and then will land with all available troops (around 10 divisions) in Seattle and Vancouver. At least this will allow you to seize Vancouver probably more easily than US towns and to have an airfield usable (between B-17 raids)

Because if the Japanese invaded LA, the rest of the country would probably say "yea! keep it!"

Looking forward to the AAR! One of the more entertaining AARs for me was when Nik tried that against the AI shortly after the game game out. Good luck - if Nik's experience was any indication of how difficult that is, you'll need it! [:D]

How to take SF (or maybe not)

Post by mogami »

Hi, OK at first glance it is clear one of the major problems facing Japan in invading the West Coast of USA is getting the transports safely across the Pacific intact and together.
I expect at least 6 USA divisions to oppose plus 4 or 5 RCT. This will mean Japan will need around 10 divisions worth of troops in supply and ready. On Dec 7 Japan has 12 divisions and around 6 Bde so the entire force has to be lifted and moved safely. (I think Japan just barely has the mass if it can all be brought to bear.)
The USN has to be removed and then airfields on west coast supressed. And Japan has to secure a port and airfield in range to support operations. This helps a bit because it does force the Allied player into trying to protect everything on the West Coast and he does not know exactly where the first landings will occur. (He can make some educated guesses simply by checking the range of Japanese aircraft) Along with all the troops and supply Japan has to lift several hundred aircraft so they can be unloaded and begin support as soon as possible. The IJN CV can only do so much on their own. And the entire herd has to be fueled and refueled enroute.
Planning the simple parts required hours. The target date for commencing movement to USA coast proper is 1 jan 1942. (The herd has to move to rally point and assemble. Will require a great deal of sorting out as the train stretches from Saigon to Wake)

Items to be accomplished.
1. Secure a line of supply and communication from Japan to USA
2. Block movement of enemy forces from Pacific back to USA.
3. Move transports and support ships into range

It's going to be really interesting to see if Mogami can pull this off.

Well if you were foolish enough to make such a statement "I can take SF" while under the influence of beer, I would suggest that you should BOTH also run your turns ONLY after having had a couple of beers. Then we shall really see who can think/drink strait.[:D]

Hi, I agree send your donation to "Mogami Invades San Francisco Beer fund" I think I should be required to drink at least 12 Pilsner Urquells per turn. I will refuse to make turns if I don't have 12 PU first.

I think this should be made dependent on the quality of your last turn. Do it well, you get your PU's.
Screw it up and you have to get wasted on the cheapest generic suds available. Motivation is the key.

Hi, I resent the implication that I would do a poor turn. Perhaps I should be required to drink 24 PU before every turn? Maybe I should play 3 games of capture San Francisco and drink 24 beers before every turn.
(How much is in the beer fund now? Robert is going to send turn 1 back tonight so I need to get started on my PU now if I want to do a turn tonight)
