WitPExcel editor is ready

Post by Aawulf »

I have finished (at least enough to use) my WitPExcel editor. If you used Rich Dionne's PacWar editor or my WiRExcel editor, then you will find this one easy to use and then some.

If you only change a few items here and there, then the game's built-in editor is still your best option.

If you make sweeping changes, design scenerios, desire a more informative interface, want 50 Abn divisions or just want to see all of your LCUs or ships at a given location all together for planning, then you might like this tool.

I have also included production summaries with a production worksheet for planning and designing and an auditor that automatically shows you which HQ's, LCUs, ships and air groups that your leaders are assigned (Easy fix for the leader being overworked with multiple commands).

Edits and manages:
1. Devices
2. HQs
3. LCUs
4. Bases
5. TFs
6. Ship Classes
7. Ships
8. Aircraft
9. Air Groups
10. Leaders
11. Production
12. Pilots
13. Map hexes

Version 1.4 is available for download by Spooky's generosity.

The editor uses Microsoft Excel (designed on XP version of Office, so not sure if older versions of Excel will work or not). Even though I reqularly scan for viruses and spybots, I still encourage the end user to exercise caution and scan first. Macros must be enabled.

Spooky's would be a good site to post this. Just send him a request, I'd bet he'd be happy to post it for you.

Is this an editor tool (similar to witpload for extraction/importing) turn 0 database information or is it something more ???/

It is an editing tool. It does extract and import the same data that any kind of editor would have to do if one desires to edit scenerios for WitP. The goal was to provide a means to turn the imported data into information that is easily understood and managable.

Whether this tool is "less" or "more" depends on individual needs and wants. It is definitely a different approach to editing WitP than anything I have seen if that is what you want to know. Of course, there are people who can fulfill their needs by walking everywhere they go while others require an automobile. It does more, but the potential user really needs to ask if they need or want more and that is only relevant if they have and are comfortable with Excel.

I noticed line 1 of several of the worksheets is essentially the descriptive version of the numeric designators for a given slot (I asume you used lookup functions). What is the easiest way to convert to the slot you would like to see?

For example when I first open the Japanese ships sheet, Kaga is displayed in line 1. If I scroll down and click on line 36, line 1 remains the same. However if I double click then click on a new cell, Line 1 will display the Line 36 info...is there another way to do this?

Edit: Never mind ....F9

observations and problems

pathing.. novice users of excell will need some documentaion on how to path to the SEN dir and the Sen DAT file they want to look at/change
this is going to be excelent for comparing one sen with another and bulk cut and past from one Sen to another using the Window/Compare tool.
Rule ONE before user start touse this BACKUP THE SEN DIR
RULE 2 DONT use original WIPTEXCel Sheet rename to SEN you want to work with
eg rename to WITP155-102.0.xls (the .0. tells you what version of WITPEXCEL the sheet came from) to work with CHS 1.02 when new version of sen mod come out create from original sheet a new sheet renamed to WITP155-1xx.0.xls use compare to look at changes allways keep orginal to create new sheet from.

Now the problems I am having (all good thinks bring pain to begin with)
1 using get/open with devices seems to work (no errors but I dont get the Panel (will take a couple of min's will beep ok))
2 using get/open aircraft has problem getting data it is pulling device info and names in columns + no panel pops up
2 using get/open on shipclass.airgroups.leaders.locations.jap ship and allied ship file all produce a VB error of 1004 (on these I get the POPUP time warning beep panel)the end result in sheet is no data at all or scrambled Device info

see sample panel below

AAWulf any clues its been years since I programed in excel and have not used VB at all
I am using Excel out the Microsoft office 2003 Pakage

Cobra, it appears that you have the wpd0xx file listed in the slot where the wpc0xx file should be listed. And, the wpd0xx file listed in the slot where the wpa0xx should be. I had considered automating that process whereby only the directory and scenerio number was needed, but in the end I scratched that in favor of leaving the flexibility to the user to work on any piece of a scenerio independently of the other files. [I hope that is your problem; otherwise it would mean something screwy happened like the macros for the buttons may have been somehow scrambled when the file was zipped and unzipped]

I agree. I do need to make documentation for people to at least get started.

I just received an email from Spooky wherein he offered to provide the DL service from his site. Very much appreciated. Before I send it to him, I will put together a simple "how to" set of instructions.

what could be wrong here - see sample screen

just testing at this stage
when cut and past from 1 sheet to another in allied ship data
the type calc is not pick up the type of ship it is picking up location ok

the cut and past is working fine in the ship class area already done several tests

now a query on what could a potential winner.. the compare and merge function in tools area I would like to test but is greyed out if we could get this to work would save a lot of cut and pasting

PS still getting 1004 error if using get all buttion is this because some funtions not completed [&:]

From what I see, it looks like scen158 has the Ship Classes already updated to include the 1906 while scen155 has no entry in that row in Ship Classes. Also, I see that Base #282 is not named in your Locations file in your scen158.

The only things not functioning should be PWHex and Pilots. PWHex isn't functional because I don't know what the 12 columns define and I simply haven't decided if spending time and increasing the file size even more is worth it for the ability to edit pilots.

That "Get All Files" is returning an error for you concerns me greatly. Email me your scen158 and I will examine it. In the mean time, I will test to see what affect renaming the file may have on button macros. I suspect that I might have an absolute filename tag on that macro.

Thank you for the feedback.

Andrew Brown has done a lot of work in the PWHex area and should be able to help there

and you just gave me a clue to look at

Aha! Renaming the file changed it to "[workbookname]calcno.calcno". I am stumped at the moment, but will solve in the next hour or so.

thats interesting why do it to that function and not the individual get button function which are working fine
I have just about got this sucker worked out and it will be the bees knees for sen mods[:D]
another problem bites the dust[8D]
the clue you gave me solved the type lable problem I did not relise you had cross linked
macros which means that you gave to apply data same as you do in data editor
input or cut and past the ship class data first then input or cut and past the ships data
which now bring up an interesting question
when you are modding and reverse enginerring (eg you only have a ship name you dont know if its in game yet or not and you need to know which bitmap/slot the ship class data is going to refer to or do you have to create a new class and art)normally you would have a list printed of ships/bitmaps/slot obtained from a utility such as WITPexporter and look it up and this brings me to..
in the actual ship name sheet.. would it be possible to have a column pulling data from the ship class sheet showing bit map used, for referance only. the column would not be part of the save function [&:] [&:]

I left at least one free column that is unused and unprotected on each sheet. The equation would be simple enough since there is a Bitmap column on the Ship Class sheet.

"=vlookup(c5,ShipClass,'Ship Class'!$q$3)" typed in Q5 of the ship sheets and copy/pasted down the range of the column will fulfill that need.

I discovered the cause of the button macro problem was that I created the macro with two different named versions of WitPExcel open, hence the name of the macro being automatically changed to include the name of the workbook. My apologies for not thinking about the consequences of doing that. The problem wasn't revealed in my testing because I had the named macro. I had to delete all of the modules and macros to fix the name issue. I can send it to you now or you might wait until I finish adding a few new functions today (a tool bar menu to activate anything from any sheet, auto syncronize button for LCUs to their formation type, auto synchronize button for ships to Class, auto syncronize button for air groups to aircraft and the Misc page will automatically fill the rest of the file locations once you fill in the Device file location).

Thanks again for feedback.

sorry to keep coming up with these but here is new problem which will upset the saving of the data back you can try this self if you have the CHS102 sen downloaded
I have tried the get data of Allied ships twice now with the same result
using the WITPExcel1.0 sheet as referance and WITP155.xls (CHS1.02) as the work sheet
note the first line of data is a dummy heading for CV's which is correct when lokking at sen with the editor..but when data get is finished the first line is for the Lexington in slot
3000 should be in slot 3001 and should be CV header if you look further down the sheet (not in sample) it is picking up other headers such as CVL's ok now if you save this back every thing will be out of plase by 1 slot number..see sample below.. solution needed
japanese ships seem ok

another request
this can be a very confusing area for moders
aircraft data sheet there is a missing column that is needed to indicate which Bitmap the aircraft slot is using most of the slot/bitmaps line up eg slot one = bitmap 1
but from slot 200 onwards you will find in one case 3 slots are using the same bit map
for slots 246 to 249 the are no matching bitmaps available so you have to refer to bitmaps other than the slot number - so could we have a column added to pull in the bitmap data which is in the database
