Delay Button And Artillery in Lineformation?

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Delay Button And Artillery in Lineformation?

Post by FaneFlugt »

First of all great game. I have some questions that I havent been able to find answers to, in the manual or on this forum.

Question 1:

What is the effect of putting artillery into lineformation?

Question 2:

Is it correct that the delay button in both detailed and quick battle dosent work as described in the manual, (makes your units move later in the turn, but sacrifies some movement points) but rather slows down the speed of the combat simulation?

The second question is of interest to me too.

Welcome to the forum!

1. Far less mobile than when in column, but greater fire power brought to bear on target in front of unit.

2. Dont know... if I want a unit to delay its move I press "w"... some movement points are lost.

The delay thingie (its more a bar than a button don't you think?) is purely about how the combat looks to the user - it doesn't affect the units or what they do in any way.

The "w" key is only effective for detailed combat.

Artillery is MUCH more effective in line.

Translated: "delay" changes the speed that units move/fight in detailed and ship combat[;)].

Just to confirm, there is an error in the manual regarding the delay bar. It controls the speed of the message display timer and has nothing to do with the unit's movement.

Arty in Line can be totally deadly

hassle is a Great shot with Arty in column (limbered ?) can do more damage then just a plain shot from Arty in line, so at times it may not look to be worth it

you can get a shot off in column and see some 2000 guys go down, while in line, a bad shot may get 50-100

but you can really get some high numbers in Line, when you get the right rolls

Well that's odd, my games' delay bar increases/decreases unit movement eg: ai units fly across the screen or move very slowly depending on where the bar is set. This "feature"? i learned from someone on the forums[X(].
NOTE: It does change the unit movement "display speed" eg: set delay to full and the battle will go very slowly so you can follow every detail/set delay to 0(no green) and the battle will flash by with units zipping around.

If you deploy into line and still have time to fire the result is reduced, or if you fire at very close range. Personally I have seen kills of between 4000 - 8000 from the first shot of a fresh art unit firing into the flank of an infantry column at a range of 3/4/5. One shot and bye bye enemy inf div[:D]

Yes, that's true--it's actually changing the display speed, so you will see units move more quickly in addition to the messages.

One shot doing 4-8k seems a tad overkill. These aren't exactly 155s

This is a 40 minute turn.

I believe that it's not one salvo, but a bombardment of some duration.

Still 40 minutes is not that long. I mean I guess if they sat there in grapeshot range and took it without moving maybe but I don't recall many if any instances of those type of casulties.

I accept the high casualty figures by taking them to be the number of troops who are no longer effective; either dead, wounded, or lying in a ditch refusing to form up and be pounded/shot at any more. The detailed battles are a sub "game" within the Stratigic game, they represent notional units of up to 10,000 men. I don't think the game is sold as a simulation of Napoleonic Battles, you would need to go down to company level to achieve something along those lines IMHO, and how long would it then take to run an end of turn cycle[X(]

Yesterday, I've wiped out a whole russian unit of inf or milita (over 11000 men) with one swedish artillery unit with the first shot

I thought 10,000 was max troop level?

Consider it a volley. Turns are 40 minutes after all.

The effective rate of fire under field conditions for a 6lb gun was 2 rounds per minute, and 12lb was one round.

A typical French divisional artillery unit in 1806 was composed of six 8lb guns. Splitting the rate of fire with the 6lb and 12lb and projecting the ROF at 1.5 shots per minute, we can assume that unit would be able to throw 160 projectiles at the target unit during one game turn.
