Detailed Battle scale question

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

I did some figuring in my head...it takes a big field to hold 10K men. In this regard, it's not very realistic, since I think you're firing a couple miles with your musket and still hitting people.

...if you wanted to be realistic about it, you'd have to be in the adjacent hex to kill as many men as you do...with anything.

...But I don't let it worry me too much. I forget about the scale, and end up thinking on battalion scale.
I still enjoy the combats...though the power of garrisons really hits home when you're defending you're home province and you activate all of the little buggers. They really tear the guts out of your opponent.

At the division level a lot of things have to be abstracted. A deployed Napoleonic division can have a front typically just a little short of one mile (there's a great table in the back of Chandler: most Napoleonic battles had about 10k men/mile, and if I recall correctly Borodino was the densest with 33k French/mile). Early incarnations of detailed combat actually used a scale of 1 hex = 1 mile but nothing had any range; everything (including all artillery) was all range 1. Nobody liked that heavy artillery and infantry had the same range. Movement rates were also fairly slow. We ended up fudging the scale a bit for the sake of playability.

As far as range goes historically: infantry could only fire effectively at about 225 yards maximum; artillery about 900 yards with direct fire (600 yds with canister). COG infantry divisions are considered to have some attached artillery.
