Problems with Windows Me

Post by fogg62 »

I have problems with Pacwar 2.2 and Windows Me. the programme doesn't start. I think that it is a problem of memory. Someone knows how to find dos memory in Windows me? (I played until last week with Windows 98 and I could change the config.sys to find more than 610K of memory, but I don't know how to do the same with Windows Me)

I just got a brand new machine with Win ME on it this past week. I downloaded the game and it runs fine on my machine. I went into My Computer and opened the c: drive. I looked at the config.sys and autoexec.bat files there using notepad - the autoexec.bat only has set commands which don't use any memory, and the config.sys is totally blank, although it does exist. You may want to try copies that are blank and see how things work.

Good Luck.

Hi, RickyB. Does WinME react to any device loading attempt in config.sys? What does it load into memory now, without a config.sys? Can you load EMM386 from the config.sys with the 'noems' parameter for example?

Microsoft is trying as hard as they can to kill the command line, and doesn't give a damn about backwards compatibility in the process. I've heard WinME is either a mistake for most people because of incompatibilties with existing DOS apps and poor stability, or its a relatively decent upgrade to Win98. I don't know who to believe on that score, but if WinME is moving away from allowing the user full control of autexec.bat and config.sys, then I'll know to stick with 98.

Hi Ed,

I don't know all the answers to these questions yet. I did just find that you can still get to the command prompt, which I could not find before. It was moved under Programs - Accessories. EMM386 is still available, but I am not sure about the NOEMS portion - it does not show up in the emm386 help information. Himem.sys is still available also.

I just checked and found I have 580K free memory, but PacWar 2.2 started fine. I don't remember the game well enough yet to run through the task forces and other things that have caused problems, but no errors yet. I will try tweaking things in the config and get back to everyone, but for now it looks okay.

I just asked about the 'noems' parameter as an example of a parameter normally unused unless the *user* turns it on.

Is anyone else using WinME with PAC/WIR? Phileas, have you been able to get more than 600K in a DOS box under WinME?

Have just down loaded PAC and works fine on winme except when I try to inspect air groups on carriers when graphics go haywire and memory warning is given. Any suggestions on how to fix this. Wasn't a problem on the old version of pac!

When I arrived at the DOS prompt (with Windows ME), I had only 565K of memory free. I think that this is the problem.
When I used my old computer with win98 I could have more than 610k of memory free (modifying the config sys).

PS Thank you and Merry Christmas to all of you.
