Diplomats too expensive?

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Diplomats too expensive?

Post by Squamry »

Has anybody managed to save up enough cash and textiles to be able to afford additional diplomats? There are times I'd like an additional diplomat or two, but never have enough of both. Textiles is probably the real killer as it is needed for so many new units.

I've produced two in my current game, and I think they should be expensive. The potential they have to affect a game can be so decisive that their production should be restricted in this way.

I just wish we could rename them. Mine arrived named 'Diplomats' and 'Dip', and I cannot change them. [:(]

I agree, they should be expensive because diplomates are very pworful and can cause a lot of trouble for the enemies...

I agree as well. I think the current cost is appropriate. While it is very difficult to afford new diplomats in short games, it is also realistic that a country would not be able to significantly change its capabilities within a few years time. In longer games, Diplomats are far too powerful to allow them to be produced en masse.

The problem is that you can't disband your diplomats so you will pay upkeep for your crappy ones forever, no matter how many Talleyrand clones your province cranks out, and diplomat upkeep is harsh.

We are considering adding a disbanding units feature as it's been a common request.

There should be a small, random NML for disbanding a diplomat IMO. Most of these guys at this time were nobility or wealthy individuals with excellent connections (or they wouldn't have gotten the job). Canning one would very likely anger a faction of one's government/nation.

That's for you backward monarchial types. We are willing to chum any number of high-falootin pretty boys to sate the blood-maddened crowds

I need to be able to rename ALL the units not just the diplomat sophistos.

Regiment de Chaveau, Leger Lanciers Polonais de la Garde Imperiale sounds so much sweeter than the 73rd Lancers, especially when impaling Ponsonby.

I agree, it does sound sweeter, but where would you ever see such a long name displayed in the game?

He can have 73 Lan and be happy with it![:'(]

Seriously, since the military advisor list just gives unit number and 3 letter abreviation you could end up with a long list of "Reg" or "Div", since the game does not represent single units. Of all the changes we want/need changing division names IMHO, is not important/needed.

I agree renaming divisions is a minor thing; at least they usually have different numbers. But, what about diplomats and generals? In the balanced scenario you start with 7 generals named commander, commander, commander, commander, commander, commander and commander. Usually I've some problems tracking them.

I wouldn't mind paying more cash for Dips...but the linen I think is silly. How many pairs of pantaloons does a Dip need, anyway?[:D]
