Oscar W/ Cannon of 2

Post by sethwrkr »

What does he have a sling shot. Jeez, might as well be a nate. Can anyone say obsolete. I can use the extra three range to build experience in china and wait for new gifhter. If TOm doesnt have all those throwing rocks and made of paper.

IS there anywhere I can look at the stats-new aircraft stats?

The Ki-43-I Oscar was armed with either two 7.7mm MGs, or one 7.7 and one 12.7mm MGs.

The Ki-43-II Oscar was armed with two 12.7mm MG.

(P-40 Warhawks were armed with six 12.7mm MG)

The main problem noted with the Oscar was that it was pathetically underarmed and protected. It took a lot of work for the Oscar do shoot down any durable Allied aircraft (P-40, Hurricane II) and only survived due to its good manuverability. Once in an Allied fighter's sights it was usually toast.

So, the rating of a cannon of 2 is historical for the Ki-43-I Oscar.

Tom,

Center mounted MGs are much more effective than wing mounted. Does your cannon table take that into account?

If Tonys and Tojos are out you are crazy to build oscar 2s. That is if the cannons are still 10 and 8. Man zeros suck now. Durability 8, cannon 7. RRRR. What were they in the old PW. I do nopt remember. Those were som rightous zeros, the 10 cannon 11 durability varaiety.

Zeros sucked in the original one too: 8 cannon, 7 durability. What made them such a problem was their manuverability, which was superior at first.

You have to face the facts that Japan didn't build any good planes when you take Manuverability, Cannon, *and* Durability into account. The Zeke, for example, was as close to the Mustang as Japan could get, yet it had a poorer durability and lesser range, and didn't arrive early enough in the war to change the end result.

The Ki-84, Ki-100 and N1M1 (?) were all the equal or better in all-round performance with the P-51D Mustang. The Ki-61 was about the equal to the P-38. Japan did produce some VERY good aircraft, however, they either only appeared late in the war, or, had their theatre of combat restricted due to IJAAF and IJNAF conflict. Imagine if Ki-61's were used on Rabul and the Solomans? The P-38 was slaughtering the A6M's, and if their equal appeared in the Ki-61 the battle would have been more equal.

Personally, I never build Ki-43-II's. They are pretty good when it comes to range, but, I see them only as the Army's version of the A6M, good for only offensive actions. The Ki-44 and Ki-61 are much better aircraft, superior to the Hurricane II, P-40 and P-39, and equal to the P-38 (best aircraft of its time).

In reality, both sides were forced to use aircraft that they didn't want. The IJAAF was forced to continually use the Ki-43, the USAAC with the P-39, and the RAF with whatever leftovers they were given! For reasons of production, capitialism, and economics, changes for orders placed for aircraft weren't looked on too kindly. Hopefully WitP will show some of this, as, I usually change my P-39 groups to P-40 ASAP. There had to be a reason WHY they actually used them!

Further modifications to aircraft weaponry, like positioning, the stability of the aircraft as a firing platform, and ammunition have not been taken into account. In reality, their effectiveness probably wouldn't change that much to warrant fiddling around. Possibly the P-38 might recieve some bonus, but, most other planes do not have the numbers of guns in their nose to warrant a visible change. Also, what hasn't been taken into account are differences in bullet speed. The A6M should be rated even worse, as, its 7.7mm guns fire at a faster rate than their 20mm guns, resulting in medium to long range shooting being very innacurate.

I use the Ki-43-IIs in a different role. They are my training aircraft.

Remember that they are FB with a range (at least now) of 6. This makes them almost ideal for striking Chinese land units without air cover, or (in a game vs AI) attacking the Chinese airbases and air force. The Nates and 43-Is autoupgrade to them (no loss in experience) so those groups, as they wear down to nubs, are the ones most likely to convert. Send them for a breather off the China coast and upgrade them when better equpment is available. In the meantime they gain experience faster than on training missions in Japan.

Even if you never get around to upgrading, they end up with experience in the 80s and are not too awful. They are better than groups of crappy pilot-trainees back in Japan sucking up all the good aircraft so desperately needed at the front.

One never needs more than a small factory of 43-IIs in my system, as their losses are small.

That depends on the qualities you consider most important. The Ki-84 had one point better in cannons, but 6 points worse in durability and had only a third of the P51's range. Dittor for N1K2, but without the extra cannon point. To me, the most important thing is the P51's incredible range which makes it a devastating weapon in PacWar. I imagine we'll see a similar thing in WitP for the P51 as well.

I don't see a Ki-100 in the list. Is that something that is going to show up in the next release?

Hi, if you want to laugh till it hurts go to www.stomptokyo.com and read review of the movie "Zero" (made by the people who did "Godzilla") It is a serious attempt to explain how/why Japan lost WWII.
