RE: CHS newbie
I just installed a second copy of the game into a new sub folder. So my Matrix Games folder now has two WitP folders, one the default the other named \WitP_CHS.
Then rename the new games shortcut on the start bar to "CHS Quick Start", so when windows saves the two different shortcuts on your start button task bar pop-up, it's easy to launch whichever version you want.

RE: CHS newbie
For more information on CHS, and how to install it, see this website:
www.bur.st/~akbrown/witp/CHS_documentation/CHS.html
Although I have provided a basic utility for swapping to/from CHS, many people just install a second version of the game, as Jim has above.

I was bit scared that I'd screw something up so I did second installation too. Far more convenient to me, even though your swapping utility seems to work perfectly.

I've done another test download of CHS 1.2 and un-zipped it with no problem. I used the XP unzipper, which is nowhere near as good as winzip. You must have had a problem with the download - I'd recommend trying again.

Do you still work on the documentation?
Really would love to see what this mod does.
Is this the latest version?

RE: CHS newbie
Thanks that helped.
Now I have some newbie questions too.
1. Why does Russia sit in China at Urumchi?
2. Why do some distance values don't fit into what my atlas says?
I checked some distances on the West Coast and India/Burma and the fit perfectly but in Australia many won't fit.
For example from Charleville to Rockhampton it should be around 300 miles but in the game it's 420 miles, why that?
3. Those rockets on late war jap carriers are SS types but weren't they used for AA?

Because they did in real life (at that time).

Sometimes this can't be helped. It comes from distortion of the map. The worst distortion occurs East-West in the southern portions of the map.
3. Those rockets on late war jap carriers are SS types but weren't they used for AA?
I can't help with this question.

RE: CHS newbie
So why don't you change it to somekind of AA weapon to simulate atleast the effect of those AA rockets?
And some more questions.
1. Why is the strike Force that attacked Pearl located at 76,36???
Don't you think that's a bit too North-West of Pearl?
OK I think a missed the part in the manual that says "...20 times the speed...".
2. Why are Pakhoi and Nanning Chinese? Japan took this area around 39. Did they lose it again by 41?
And some more questions.

2. Yes - Japanese took it Nov 39 but withdrew Nov 40 ( purpose of incursion was to block transit of good between China and Hanoi - once French allowed Japanese occupation of Hanoi - incursion was unnecessary - further - in this year long campaign - the Chinese had given the Japanese a heck of a time )

As to Rockets need Don to jump in on that one.
I'm afraid I am pristinely ignorant on the subject of the Rockets. The Japanese portion of my reference library is the weakest of the major navies – only Conway and Watts – and neither of them have any detail on them. So it’s off to the web, which supplied: this link. This indicates the rockets were AA and jogs my memory for some ancient reference to their intended use for point defense. They were mounted in 28-barrel launchers and (I believe) were intended to be simultaneously launched in front of attacking aircraft (as opposed to directly aimed at them, like a standard AA gun).
The 5” rockets (device 083) in WITP are listed as type SS. They are installed on two Japanese carrier classes and also on U.S. LSM(R), LCI(R) and some PTs. There are also 4.5in SS rockets, which are used on LCI(G) and LCS(L) classes. I therefore assume the Type SS means something like “Ship to Shore” and these are not the correct device for Shinano (and other Japanese ships).
I have no idea how we might model AA rockets and we are out of device slots anyway (there are four left, at the beginning of mines and asw weapons and two more after radars but I do not know if these are usable). We have few alternatives:
[ol]
[*] Try and define a device for the AA Rockets, then either:
- Experiment with one of the four “open” device slots (104, 118, 144-145) and see if they work.
- Replace some other device with the rockets.
[*] Ignore them altogether. Oleg – jump in here!.
[/ol]
All of these things are either beyond my ability or too time consuming for me to attempt. Anyone else??
RE: CHS newbie
1. Use a slot for a weapon that is mountefd only on 2 carriers seems waste to me. I'm sure you find better use for those slots. Or is there some equipment that has less right to exist?
2. sounds good but some months ago I also searched a bit about those rockets because I just couln't believe the Japs used AA rockets. I just couldn't find any detail on how effective they were. We have to wait till someone shows up with some details about that.
3. I think 12 launchers each with 28 barrels seem a bit BIG to be ignored.

I appreciate your sense of humor Don (I truely do) - perhaps you're better as comedian than as modder? [8D]
Since I don't think there is any evidence those rockets ever downed an aircraft (and were very dangerous to their own crew) in fact you'd do well to ignore them altogether.
IJN BB main armament had specialised AA ammo though, and I *think* it actually downed a plane or two so you may entertain with giving it DP capability...

No, I think my one true skill might be my decisiveness, but I’m not too sure of that.
What’s yours??
