Ok, back to the orginal thread!!

For air combat; Twelve O'Clock High! The raid to Sweinfurt (sp)!

Naval Combat; They Were Expendable! When the two PT's attack the Nagami Class Crusier (fictious I assume).

Marine Combat; Guadacanal Diary, most of the movie is PR, some good scene's when the Toyko Express calls.

Army Combat;
1) US Army - Easy Company takes the guns at Bre Court Manor!
2) Brit - A Bridge to Far - The fighting around the Arnhem bridge ... John Frosts Battalion.
3) German - Cross of Iron - Sgt. Steiner leads his patrol back into the lines ...
4) Japanese - Seven Samuri - Good fighting and tactics ...
5) Russian - Enemy at the Gates - good scenes inside the city and the hopelessness of the fighting.

Resistance fighters; Soldier of Orange and The Train!

The D-day airborne assault in Band of Brothers. That made it it pucker a wee bit!

Yes, the destruction of the two '88s in Band of Brothers was ***fantastic***. I have the DVD box and I rewatched the whole scene two times in a row before moving on.

Enemy at the Gates - The scene where the guys coming across the Volga under bombardment with the survivors being issued one stripper clip of ammo and every second guy getting a rifle and immeadiately thrown into a human wave assault. Man, that had to suck.

And, of course, knowing the commisars were standing behind them with machine guns, ready to punish them for treason if they ran away. It was sickening to watch...

RAN

The scene at the end, its the ultimate defeat scene in movies

I saw it in the theater when it came out you could have head a pin drop

Saw it more recently on video and it was good, but its one of those films that needs the big screen, Kurosawa shot it that way.

I saw Starship Troopers, the human soldiers were so bad that my freinds and I started debating how far back in history you could go to pull a battalion that could kill bugs faster than the mobile (anyone notice that all they did was walk) infantry. We eventually decided that a late US Civil War cavalry unit with repeating rifles would be the earliest unit that could out preform the solidiers in the movies. Better discipine, MUCH better fire control, high caliber soft lead slugs coming in volleys would have done 10 times the damage of high velocity 30cal assault rifles. Funny film

Waterloo, 1971

Mulholland: [the Old Guard is surrounded by British cavalry] Brave Frenchmen! You have done all that the honor of war demands; His Grace, the Duke of Wellington, invites you to save your lives! Will you surrender?
Vicomte Pierre Cambronne: MERDE!
[Cavalry pulls back exposing ranks of artillery]

...talk about stubborn...
Kirk Lazarus: I know who I am. I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude!
Ron Swanson: Clear alcohols are for rich women on diets.

Plus they wore football/hockey equipment instead of powered armour like in Heinlein's story. It wasn't really a WAR film...[:D]

Pretty much true too, although I'm not sure Wellington asked for their surrender......

Cambronne was captured, by the way. There is a painting of him being presented to Wellington. He's being led by his epaulette.

It was a joke. The only thing it had in common with the great book was the title and some character names.

Damn, I have it on DVD and still haven't watched it. [8|]
But this description sounds awfully similiar to a scene in a Call of Duty game, when you actually ARE one of those poor surviving sods. [:)]
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage.

Well, that would be because it IS that scene! [:D] The crossing of the Volga scene is also identical.

Far too many to name them all.

Particular favourites. Both battle scenes in SPR. The first was pretty shattering and left me wondering at the randomness of it all. I wondered how anyone ever managed to survive for very long. The second was very tense as you heard the rattle of tank tracks approaching. Wade's death scene was also pretty bleak and unforgettable, and the hand to hand fight scene in the final battle should be show to anyone who thinks combat is glamorous or in any way exiting. It was the only War film I ever watched where I didn't relish the approach of another action scene. Never had that experience before or after. If there was one film I'd take to a desert island...

The final credits of the Thin red line was also very memorable to me. My favourite scene in the whole movie.

I always remember a scene in the Big Red one where one of the guys gets hit by a mine, and Lee Marvin picks up a piece of flesh and throws it away before telling the injured soldier something along the lines of "It was one of your balls but it's alright, you have two".

The scene in A bridge to far, where the German Soldier comes across the bridge to talk to the British Paras about surrender and the British Officer refuses to accept the surrender. Sorry, we'd love to take you prisoner but we just don't have the room. Fabulous. Any scene with Gene Hackman and that accent is also worth watching although that aside, he's one of my favourite screen actors.

Any scene from Where Eagles Dare.

The final redoubt scene in Zulu. Second rank, present, aim, fire. Third rank, present.....

Anyway, I could go on...

regards,
IronDuke

I am relatively new to this forum, however I have seen many war films. I would have to say one of the best war movies would have to be the german film, "Stalingrad", simply fantastic, i even rank it above Das Boot. I would call it the SPR of the Axis side. Enemy at the Gates was too unrealistic for me. They should have at least tried to mimic a Russian accent :)

You're right, so many - too many to name them all.

Just to add on Saving Private Ryan: after the opening battle sequence - I forget exactly when - they showed a view down the beach from up on high. Many, many bodies in the surf. Words are too meager to convey the feeling.

Another favorite scene was in "Glory" when the commnding officer got killed and his men got mad and charged the fort. Morgon Freeman looked so cool running with the American flag behind him while runnning through that fort. Not very realistic I have to admit but it was a good scene.

the many scenes of cavalry tactics in John Ford movies. In particular, there is a great depiction in the one battle scene in Sargent Rutledge.
