New system questions

Post by RevRick »

So, I broke down and bought a new CPU. Seems that upgrading the old one would cost more than a new one and leave me with a still slower, smaller, less powerful machine. So...... break out the greenbacks. Trouble is that it comes with Windows ME on it, and it won't read the old PACWAR.EXE for beans. Seems to me I saw a thread on this board about a way in which it could be made to work with the MS-DOS button which is supposed to be on this critter somewhere. Since I don't have time to crawl through all of the threads, if you know about this and have the straight skinny, er...scuttlebutt....er proper information for such an operation, could you email it to me, or perhaps post it as a reponse so others who find themselves in similar situations could use it.
Thanks Much, and

Hi Rev. Rick,
I have some scuttlebutt but not the straight skinny, but since nobody else has answered, here you go. I am not sure anybody has totally solved this one for everyone anyway. I have ME on my new machine, and the latest PacWar release opens and runs fine on it for me. However, I haven't played it in depth, so I may have memory problems with the carrier air groups or something.

I did install AHs Stalingrad on it last night, figuring no way would that work because it requires DOS mode and the ability to detect the CD, and it always crashed on the 95/98 machines. That install said that the game required DOS mode but that the OS did not support that (a ME message I assume) and it said to open the program properties and make changes. I set the properties to not detect Windows and ran it. It opened with a message that it was running in a Virtual DOS window and the program ran fine, although I did not actually play it at that point - I was wanting the OOB to compare to the WIR Stalingrad setup that I am updating. I was even able to Alt-Tab between it and WIR numerous times without any problems, which greatly surprised me. This was much better than I could do with Stalingrad before, as it required being in DOS mode and thus no other programs could run.

Since I don't have any problems with PacWar under ME, I can't say if this would help you or anybody else having problems, but maybe it is worth a try. It should worked well for Stalingrad.

Good Luck
Rick

I am also very interested if Windows ME will play the new version of PacWar OK. I'm thinking of getting a new PC with the latest version of Windows but NOT if it won't play PacWar. . .anybody else with experience in this area?

PacWar 2.2 is running fine on my Windows ME. Sometimes I get a blue screen with some message about not being able to run in a window, but I just exit or escape that and start again and it works fine. One of my friends had to set up his memory differently to run it on his Windows ME. I've had no real problems.
