Game Improvement Considerations

Post by mdh1204 »

PRODUCTION

To improve the game's validity in terms of representing WWII, the company should design a production spiral unique to each region. For example, the German player would have a unique spiral under most/all of its territories. Northern Italy and Southern Italy would have the same spiral and it would contrast with Western and Eastern Germany's Spiral. This would replace the system of graying out different types of weapons, and allow for unique units to be built within each province. Italy's armor would look more like Japan's and have an entirely different characteristic specifications chart.

NATIONAL ARMED FORCES ANOMALIES

France should have limited armor and be slightly stronger.

Italy's army should have limited infantry, armor, and aircraft production.

Spain's army is too small, and should be comparable to a revamped Italian army with greater limitations to its fleet, air and armor.

NATIONALLY UNIQUE VICTORY CONDITIONS

Germany should not surrender until its capital is taken and western Germany is either occupied or near collapse.

Japan should never surrender.

Russia should surrender when Leningrad, Moscow, and Stalingrad are jointly occupied for more than 1 turn.

Britain should surrender when its capital is occupied for more than 1 turn.

America should surrender when its capital is occupied for more than 1 turn.

HISTORICAL ACCURACY

Although I'm not an authority on the issue, I don't believe that North Africa is as accessible to Axis domination as is allowed through the game's supply system.

I dont terribly agree that your suggestions would make for a better game. Sure, they might add a bit of accuracy but at the sacrifice of simplicity and in the case of your surrender suggestions probably also playbalance. Just to comment on one specific - I dont see the CW surrendering if London was taken rather I would expect them to fight on from the colonies. In particular I dont see the Royal Navy scutling itself just because London was in German hands. In short - interesting ideas but imho not meant for this particular game. Maybe when WiF comes out (if ever) we can have the desire for such detail satisfied.

Hi Jan. Thanks for the feedback. What is WiF? Maybe right about UK, but I would think the nation's industry would have suffered to such a degree and its government would have become so de-centralized that England, in its foresight, would have made whatever peace was necessary in order to actually get its country back.

Nuclear weapons, however, make for a strong diplomatic tool for unconditional surrender.

P.S. Jan - no changes in playability - just more annoying code for the programmer...

Erm.

Adding a strong Spanish army would definitely change balance - not that I disagree with that particular one.

Making the entire CW (or did you mean WA?) surrender if London is taken definitely changes balance. The same with Russia surrendering. To some degree also Japan.

The thing is - I dont see what is gained wrt playability.

I concur. What you suggest, mdh, may be perfectly in step with history, but that really is not this games raison d'etre.
