A modest proposal
-WiTP was created as a highly moddable game, however, it´s not mod friendly, as you need lots of backups (for Art changes) and even double instalations. Now we have a new mod (scen#50) which is incompatible with both CHS ans stock Witp, so here we´re back to more backups or a triple instalation (!!!). I think it could be fixed withouth too much trouble. Here are my ideas.
1-Make Andrew Brown´s map the official one (is it possible?)
2-Create a feature like that we have in Civ3, where you store the specific graphic files of a scenario in a directory, then, in the editor you point to this directory. When starting the scenario the program search first for the specific graphic files (in the special directory) and then use the default files, so if you want to change only a few planes, you place the graphics in that scenario directory and then all the other graphics will be the default ones. Is it possible? I know that no further development of WiTP is intended, but maybe this would improve the game lifespan by making it more easily moddable. Just a hope....[&o]

Now might be as good a time as any to say that this has been discussed between Matrix and myself. I am not sure if it is definitely going ahead, however. So if you (or anyone besides me) would like to see this happen, it might be a good idea to say so here. That would help to provide an idea of how much support (or opposition) this might have.

RE: A modest proposal
I agree, make Andres excellent map( without extensions ) the 'official' map. And then all senarios can be played on that map please. But, which of andrews maps will we use. [:D]
Make Andrew's Map the Official Map
I vote for making Andrew's Map the official map!

Perhaps this would call for an official poll?

RE: Make Andrew's Map the Official Map
I totally agree with making AB's map the official one. Let's hope the deal doesn't get bogged down in contractual negotiations
Bombur's suggestion is also a good one. Everything should be per scenario, it would make life much easier. What I might dispute is that WitP was "made to be highly moddable" in the first place. Frag has stated that originally an editor was not going to be shipped with it for example. The various hard-wired undocumented features for another.

RE: A modest proposal
Well, it could be made an optional map, certainly. I am, quite honestly, not a huge fan of it. I'm in no way belittling the work that's gone into it, but it's too much like a boardgame map for my liking.

RE: A modest proposal
I am not against it [:D]
Official map is not "bad enough" for me to run from it in anger, but having just one official map would help, so it might as well be Andrew's.
Things to keep in mind:
- A tool to convert ongoing games (PBEMs too) to possible new map would be helpful.
- New art for Andrew's map (we oughta keep nagging Subchaser to finish it [8D])
- Please, please, PLEASE, please *NO* Panama-Aden-Galapagos-Falklands-Champs d Elysses extensions
O.

I have kept these as CHS "extensions" (and created a CHS version without them) for a reason - because I don't believe they belong on any "default" map, even my alternative one. They are an option only.
And thankyou everyone for your comments. I appreciate them very much.

RE: A modest proposal
-This is good to see there is good support for that idea, however, withouth a feature to make alternate graphics coexist with the official ones, a double install (or triple install) still will be necessary.
RE: A modest proposal
hate to be a naysayer here but the graphics, lines and other 'added' features are a bit much. Andrew's map with some of SC's artistic touches....now that I would support

RE: A modest proposal
I've been using your map since I started playing anyway, and didn't return to official one at all.
So, I'm absolutely down for making it official. Style 4 of your map, to be more precise.

But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage.
