This team WITP thing is a blast. When something goes wrong you can always blame it on someone else. Plus, you can leave the worst fiascoes out of the AAR [:)] Would be nice to merge the files in a non-sequential fashion, though.

Off topic, but a serious entomological dilemma just ocurred to me while I was waiting for my coffee to brew. I watched a fly assiduously cleaning his front legs and head for a couple of minutes. This chap was seriously obsessed. Then it occurs to me.."What's the point?" When he is done he is just going to spend a lot of energy looking for another pile of you know what to land on. Well, in his defence, I suppose he could have been a fruit fly.

After the bloody nose sustained in the first invasion attempt, the Japanese have come back at Kendari like a linebacker after the humiliation of a chop block. No less than 4 battleships and 6 heavy cruisers are hurling 8 to 14 diameter HE shells at the place for 3 days now. Allied air wisely bugged out again when the BB's showed up. USS Edsall, lead ship in the destroyer squadron during the battle of Kendari lost hedway and had to be towed to Kendari, only to be pumelled again during the bombardment of the harbor. Rather than be destroyed in port, she made a run for Lautem, but had to be scuttled 100 nm short of her destination. Of the original invasion TF, it appears not one ship survived, though most of the asault troops got off North of Kendari.

Cap Mandrake suffered a severe head injury while walking outside his command post today.
Seems a Japanese soldier was up in a tree for quite some time reporting back to his command when he mistakingly kicked over a heavy metal pale which hit Cap square on the head. We now know that the Japanese soldier was up there for quite some time due to size of the metal pale and also the quanity of feces and urine found all over on Cap . He will return to duty as soon as possible to continue to spank the IJN..

As fate would have it, Col Goodrich did get a new assignment as a technical liason with Douglas Aviation and a trip back to Los Angeles to work some time in July 1942

Here is an action picture from Cap Wolff, BS-VIG-1 Groep during the morning attack, Jan 14, in the Java Sea. The vessel on the left is identified as either Kongo or Haruna. Our best estimate is 3 confirmed torpedo hits each on 2 Kongo class BB's. Confirmed air losses, 1 Martin 139 and 1 BeaufortV-IX. I suspect our little friends may be a bit more cautious about venturing within Swordfish/Beaufort range in the future.

After knocking a few heads in the Coral Sea, a Jap carrier force (carriers still unidentified) saunters up to Sorong via the Torres Straight and flattens another RNAS MSW (Warmambool)on the way [:@]

The only bright spot is the transports at PM unloading their troop cargoes before being hit and the P40's downed an equal number of Zeros.

After a sustained air and land assault, Rangoon fell on Jan 8. A large evacuation convoy was able to safely retrieve most of the defenders, but losses suffered by the convoy on the run in to Rangoon forced Brig Gen Farwell to make a difficult decision. 1st and 2nd Burma Brigades and some support troops stayed as a rearguard, as there was not enough lift cpacity to evaucate all. Nearly 12,000 Allied soldiers became POW's and 17 valuable, inoperable P-40's had to be abandoned on the field.

The enemy; however, paid a heavy price in aircraft and some 70% of the AVG's most experienced pilots escaped.

I pulled some strings with my buddy Rico to get this past the censors. We are hard at work getting all the Com equipment ready for SouthPac at Noumea, but I do get one day off a week so I did some sightseeing. The card is a picture of the town hall. New Caledonia is a beautiful place and I am having a hard time getting used to women with bare bosoms, which is the habit of some of the locals. It sure isn't Idaho. Anyway, Adm Halsey, they call him the "Bull", came into Adm Ghormely's office today while I was wiring the shortwave. Boy, did he lay into Adm Ghormley. It seems he is bridling at orders to avoid contact and was itching to "kill some Japs". Adm Ghormley gave it back to him and said it was ordered from above. As for me, I'll take my $92 a month electrician's mate pay and leave the decision-making to the brass. Neither of them seemed to be having a pleasant day. Well, got to go now. I'll write as soon as I can. Say, any way you can send some licorice sticks?
