How is this for a battle line

okay this was a much better battle
in fact, last month these two armies had one of the better battles of the whole war

a swarm of Prussian Cav vs a new, slightly undertrained French Army trying to move the backwater Provinces for easy training

which as you can see, Heavy Cav vs Inf and Guns, with out support, is in trouble

in fact, once the guns opened fire, it was a mess, one Cav was destroyed outright, the other took enough damage to route

gambled with my Cav and pulled it out of line, to hit the routed Cav, which opened a hole, and my Arty took 2000 dead from the next charge

was having trouble comeing out of squarge into line with the newer troops, so tried to speed things along with my Cav, and made a flank charge into a good order Cav, I again lost some 2000 dead, for around 12-1500

but shortly, my 2nd Gun, was able to wear down anyone who got in range, and the enemy line soon broke off

Although I often have to throw some cav into the line as a stop gap measure, I try to keep them out of it as much as I possibly can: that way they are available to run through and do a charge when opportunities come up. I usually make at least half the cav my "reserve".

The second screenshot is almost identical to how I try to setup, though I always keep my Cav in Reserve or on the extreme flanks and throw them in once the enemy begins to waver. My Corps generally go 3 Inf, 2 Arty, 1 Cav and then with the upgrade I will add another Cav. No screenshots but last night I had the grand-daddy of detailed battles against the British in York! Yes I had babied the Spanish Fleet and then doubled it in size over the years and was able to land 2 Corps sans leaders on merry English soil. I knew they had a large Army in London, ~ 175000, but I was suprised as hell when it was more like 275000! Anyways the British attacked with about 225000(a lot of Militia) against my 2 Spanish Corps of about 96000 troops. I had the edge in upgrades by this point so maybe the outcome was never in doubt but it was very tense to have wave after wave of Infantry/Militia/Cavalry crash against your lines. The British sounded the retreat after a day of battle and sulked away with 72000 casualties versus about 12000 Spanish.

Out of that huge British force it only had 2(!) Arty divisions. Now we all know that Arty rules in detailed battles, especially with a few upgrades, yet the AI doesn't and at times I feel it is hardly fair and wish it would get more Arty!!

okay, just for info
when battle started, all I could see was one Cav to the south of, I tried to form a line, the Cav was in the way with the inf behind, I had enought points to move and from into line to the side, if I waited, and let the Cav move, the Inf would not of had enough points to deploy

in fact that is the end of the 2nd turn, I have not even fired or moved other then trying to form a line

Yes, I try to keep my Cav in the rear or to the flank, when I can
