SITUATION REPORT: 9-13-43 SEAC:

Things are starting to heat up in Burma. Japan stages an attack at Pagan only to be repelled with heavy casualties. The 22nd Australian Brigade crosses the Irrawaddy River downstream of Pagan and is forced to immediately shock attack the defenders and suffers heavy losses.

Chinese shock attack at Lashio forces the Japanese to retreat from the city.

Thunderstorms ground most of the Allied air force and more bad weather is predicted for tomorrow.

SOPAC:

Allied bombers continue to pound Rabaul and Shortlands.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-14-43

SEAC:

With an assist by RAF Bomber Command, SEAC makes it across the Irrawaddy River in force downstream from Pagan. The 18th UK Infantry Division, 15th Indian Brigade and the 22nd Australian Brigade get 8:1 odds in a shock attack on the Japanese defenders and force them to retreat towards Rangoon. Men and materiel will continue to pour across this bridgehead... perhaps the most significant breakout in the SE Asian theatre of the entire war. The Allies now have a chance to cut off and destroy in detail the entire IJA force in Burma!

SOPAC:

Allied bombers continue to suppress the last 2 Japanese airbases left in the southern Pacific at Rabaul and Shortlands.

Marky...thanx for your comments. I hope to capture Rangoon ASAP but there are 30,000+ IJA troops entrenched there. I have 8 seige artillery regiments working their way through the jungle from Akyab right now but it will be a couple more weeks before they arrive.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-20-43

NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: INVASION OF WEWAK....D-DAY MINUS ONE

Allied assault forces will hit the beach at Wewak tomorrow. Hundreds of bombers are already flying to soften up the target. Intell reports 20,000 IJA entrenched there.

Coodinating with the assault on Wewak, USN Fast CV TFs are making a wide sweep to the east of the New Guinea to prevent interference from IJN CV TFs.

SEAC:

Allied forces invest Rangoon and will begin their preliminary bombardments tomorrow. Over 120,000 IJA troops are cut off by the massive SEAC "right hook" down the coast from Akyab while 8 Chinese Divisions fix 35,000 IJA in place at Pagan.

Meanwhile, RAF Bomber Command begins to work over Rangoon defenses.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-21-43

NEW GUINEA CAMPAIGN: INVASION OF WEWAK

Following the bombardment of 8 BBs, 10 CAs and hundreds of bombers, the USMC 1st and 3rd Divisions, US Army 43rd and Americal Divisions, 8th Australian Tank Regiment and 4 Artillery regiments stormed ashore at dawn today. The 20,000 defenders seemed too stunned to resist and an all out shock attack is ordered for tomorrow.

SEAC:

The 14th Indian Division and the 16th Indian Brigade force their way across the Irrawaddy River SE of Mandalay with an audacious shock attack on the IJA 55th Infantry Division. Surprisingly although the numbers of troops involved were roughly equal the Allies achieved 8:1 odds on the IJA.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-24-43

SEAC:

The Japanese defensive line appears to have been shattered in Burma as both SEAC offensive thrusts achieve complete breakthroughs. The coastal offensive has captured Rangoon and killed over 14,000 IJA there over the last 2 days. The vanguard of this offensive has paused on the banks of the Salween River waiting for re-supply before storming Moulmein. The 18th UK Division meanwhile shock attacks across the Salween farther upstream and storms into Rahaeng.

The central Burma offensive has crossed the Irrawaddy in 2 places. The 16th Indian Brigade and the 14th Indian Division shock attack the IJA 55th Division out of their way and are about to envelop Pagan. Meanwhile, over 50,000 IJA are cut off in eastern Burma.

The largest concentration of carrier power to date......8 CVs and 4 CVLs with over 900 AC...sortied from Guadalcanal to both cover the Wewak invasion and strike Japanese shipping in port at Palau. After refueling yesterday, the CV TFs made a high speed run-in to Palau overnight and launched naval raids on Japanese shipping in the morning. 1st strike was a fighter sweep over Palau to prevent any interference with the operation:

That's gotta hurt! But why are those "shell hits"? Have your planes switched to using rockets?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Good question Capt Harlock! To tell you the truth, the 1st strike on the CAs was so devastating I just skipped over the 2nd attack in the combat replay. What I suspect happened was that the 2nd strike was mostly F6F Hellcats and the CAs were probably sinking(CA Kako was already sunk) so maybe there wasnt enough of a target to bomb and the aircraft just strafed the parts of the ships that were not yet submerged.

I will replay the combat report and get back to you on that.
EDIT.... Checked the combat report....the shell hits were .50 caliber machine guns from the F6F Hellcats....not from rocket fire.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-26-43

SEAC:

SEAC forces pause momentarily after isolating the bulk of the IJA in Burma. A 31 ship convoy is steaming towards Rangoon carrying much needed supplies and the aviation engineers necessary to make the airfield operational(the engineers sent overland from Akyab are still struggling through the jungle). This is the most important Allied convoy since the dark days of July/August 1942 and the Japanese will probably throw everything they have at it. It is scheduled to reach Rangoon harbor tomorrow and is provided LRCAP by 2 Spitfire and 3 P-40N squadrons.

CV RAID ON PALAU:

The USN CV TFs stayed around for another day to work over the ships in port at Palau. Another 9 IJN ships were sunk today.

SITUATION REPORT: 9-27-43

SEAC:

The transport convoy to Rangoon makes port but the Japanese throw every available plane at it. Continous dogfights swirl over the harbor as the Japanese lose 62 AC in A2A combat vs 26 Allied. 3 Allied AKs are hit of which 2 will probably sink.

As the 1st aviation engineers are unloaded, the first operational P-47 squadrons are staged into Rangoon for CAP tomorrow.

Meanwhile, SEAC ground troops continue to shock attack IJA units forcing them to retreat farther away from their supply sources.

Thought that it might be a good time to post relative scores before the next Allied offensive. The Allies have now gone ahead of the Japanese both in total points scored and in A2A kills. The Allies also have an advantage in sunken ships of 800 Japanese to 421 Allied:

After the disaster in Burma I have been forced to plan for the invasion of Thailand and Malaya. Rangoon is being built up quite fast. There is obviously no hope of taking any of the lost territory back. Best move for me is to delay further advance, and make it costly. Rangoon gives the Allies far too forward an airbase, and I don't have the fighters to go up against them every day. I put them in piece at a time they get chewed up. I put squadrons in at a time, they get chewed up. I don't put anything up I am in trouble... not a pleasant situation to be in. The defence of Malaya/Thailand will be 90% ground campaign only. Troops are on the way, taken from other areas that can little afford to lose them.

To date Mid May '43 45 Allied subs confirmed sunk.

Salmon went down yesterday near port, Whale and Tambor hit and sunk near Formosa.

It is now 5 months later... 74 confirmed Allied sub kills. It has been one heck of an ASW fight between Luzon and Formosa, and just off the Japanese Home Islands. I've lost a lot of tankers, and had many damaged.
