Complexity level?

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

Complexity level?

Post by Zap »

Just a question to those who prefer their level of complexity higher than intermediate.
Since the patch is out I am giving a serious look at the game.

Do you find the game to meet your needs for complexity? In your opinion, what is the aspect of the game that is most complex.

Complexity is indeed a factor for me as well in all wargames. Far too many of the beer and pretzel efforts out there claim to be Strategic.

With the ability to influence - Diplomacy - The Economy - Minors - Majors - Development - Military Production and offer either quick battles or more detailed ones this game makes it for me.

It will take quite a while to truly understand all the nuances of this game!

I dont know if it is too complex or too easy, but the game is fun and has a good feel to it, I have had the game since it first came out, and have played with it every day, and I am still finding out new things, that you or the game can do

for me, Detail combat is a little too bland and general, but I can live with it(and it is fun, and has had me on my toes a few times)

(I mean, UV and WitP, the air warfare is General, would of liked to of seen a more BTR style of air to air combat, but with in the game it works very well)

You will have to define Complexity.

I for one thing this game is not the easiest to learn. The information screens are located in many places and some information (waste) is not defined clearly in the manual. The patch helps by adding more pop up text with the mouse over, so this helps a little. The hardest part of the game is find the information you need about what is going on. The information is in a number of location. Events are a good strating spot. Then you need to look at the reports you access via having the mouse close to the blue bar at the bottom of the map. The access to these reports pop up when your mouse is close to the bottom of the map portion of the screen. This is where you will find the detail of what happened in the last turn, including your economic production, unit production, reinforcements. You need to click on the four advisors and work through them to figure out what you can and can not do.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO IS READ THE MANUAL FROM FRONT TO BACK. I can not stress this enough, I have re-read it this weekend and lots of things make sense now that did not earlier.

Once you read the manual and play around some then you will get the game, which really is not the complex. I consider Chess to be complex, not because the rules are hard but because the strategies and the interworkings of the different unit movement make it hard to play well. This game, Crown of Glory, is not complex to play, but it does have a harder learning curve then most games. The movement system is almost a crap shoot at times, but I think this captures the flavor of the era very well. The solution is to keep a cavalry + horse artillery corp or army around to chase down the stray units walking around you nation freeing prisoners.

I think this is the best strategic game on Napoleonics out there today. The best part, for my money, is the detailed battle game (hexwar). This lets you play out the battles in a miniature like game.

Hopefully this helps you in making your decision. Get it, it will frustrate you at times, but it will reward you as well.

Eric Rutkins told me that if I turned off advisors the complexity would increase.

Yes and no. It is easy to play the game without going through the detail of working your developments, production settings, military troops reordering, and trade making. But I find these elements are important to doing well in the millitary field. Certainly it is easier to play the game and figure out the movement and combat, with the advisors turned on. I did this when I started but I still looked through the screens to see what was happening so I got an idea of what I might do.

For your first few games I would do it this way, but after a while it is worth figuring it out. It is really not that hard. The interface makes it relatively easy with the slider bars at the side of the development screen. I found the diplomacy screen the hardest to figure out. I still find stuff I did not know was there by clicking on things.

Have fun.

I personally find it easier to learn the game with all advisors turned off...that way you can try a few things to see how they work and then move on to other things....I've never turned them on in any games I've played.

Yep!

Trial and error, experiment, re read the manual, and use this forum! (you probably get more and better advice here than any where else... especially the manual[;)])
