End of 1941

Post by Mark VII »

As I said before, we had to back track in the game 4 turns(eight days) and restart at the 12/26 turn in order to solve the vanishing 18th XX bug. So far so good except a follow order that didn't work very well.

After 24 days of heavy fighting we have reached the end of 1941. The Allies have fought tooth and nail for every inch of ground. Ed's forward defence has caused heavier than historical causalties but I don't think it has slowed down the Japanese overall time table that much except maybe in the Rabaul area.

So far these ships have been sunk;
Japanese: Mogami, 1xDD, 1xPG, 1xTK, 2xSS, 2xLarge AP, 1xSmall AP, and 3xSmall AK's.
Hiryu and Soryu damaged(amount classified), Mikuma ended up with less than 40 damage and 5 or 6 DD's also have had 20-50 damage, all are in ship-repair ports getting better.

Allies: Lexington, POW, Houston, Java, Danae, Marblehead, 12xOld US DD's, 6xUK DD's, 1xSS, 1xMSW and 7xPT's.
Repulse has to be badly damaged and Boise should also have some damage.

The pre-war Allied fleet in the SE Resource Area has been mostly eliminated. Only 2 Dutch CL's and some DD's remain. The Dutch squadron was just seen at Kendari, where two IJN surface action TF's are about to arrive with 3xBB's, 3xCA's and supporting DD's. Lets see how long the Dutch have a fleet?

Aircraft losses have been 212 Japanese and 424 Allied. Not sure if that is high or low.

I think/hope that Luzon and Malaya will fold up within the next two weeks, we shall see.

The first naval action between the Mogami's and Force Z illustrate well my frustration over the surface combat model regarding the design decision to add a little "mystery" to it by having ships randomly off "doing something else". Grrrr. How can POW take damage yet not get off a shot? Why would this ship, hellooooo, the flagship, not be in formation with the other ships in a TF? This randomness regarding ships in a TF is bogus. It should be applied to TFs in a hex (which it is not...multiple TFs all somehow manage to intercept) and not to ships in a TF. Silly. Needs to be fixed.

OK The Warm and Fuzzies can come to the rescue and "explain" what the POW was doing now. Sorry for commenting on the thread but this was too good an example of a flawed design decision.

Ron, no problem you commenting on the thread. Was wondering why the POW and Vampire did not engage. By the way, POW was never fired on nor did she fire during the surface engagement. I don't think the name Prince of Wales ever came up under her during the combat. I assumed she was caught out of position on the far side of the formation during the night engagement or was off checking on a sighting that was false. Needless to say, as the IJN player, was not sorry to see her not get involved. POW got hers during the withdrawal back to Singapore by air and sub assets.

The Dutch Fleet is no more and Rabaul FINALLY falls. Rabaul is captured in decent condition with only 20 port and 13 airfield service damage. Unlike our first try before the restart, the Battle of Kendari does not go as well this time with a daytime surface engagement. Only my battleship TF is heavily engaged, the fate of the Dutch is the same but some of my DD's get pounded. Lunga is captured as I begin to occupy the Eastern Solomons.

The end came to POW in a strange way badly damaged and not repairable I decided to use her as Nell bait outside of Singapore with the whole AVG waiting to pounce on the Nells and Betty`s that were sure to come except that a waiting sub put a couple of fish into her and that was all she wrote.[:D]

Kendari falls 1/3-1/4/42

Post by Mark VII »

Two divisions and supporting units have entered Manila through the back door and have begun actions designed to convince MacArthur to abandon the city and save the lives of the local Philippino population.

Kendari is captured in good condition with only minor resistance offered by the Dutch. I'm sure seeing their fleet annilated in broad daylight two days ago totally destroyed their will to fight. With the airfleet that has been flown in, the Japanese now control the Makassar Strait, the Java Sea, the Banda Sea and the Timor Sea. Non-Japanese ships sailing in this area do so at their own risk!

Ambush at Bangkok 1/9-1/10/42

Post by Mark VII »

Ed had been sending city bombing raids to Bangkok going after the HI, some damage but really only annoying. Decided to attempt a ambush threw three Daitai of Zero's into Bangkok and see what happens. For the loss of one Zero, 8 Buffalo's, a AVG P40B, a Hudson and 4 BlenheimI are claimed with another 4 Buffalo's probably crashing as op losses on the way back to base. As I will find out in two days, this ambush thing works both ways.[:@]

"Operation Egg Drop" is nearly completed and the Americans have discovered(and started clearing) mines at one of their more exposed bases. No hits reported so far. There is "???CLASSIFIED???" other targets.

The many engineers at Johore Bahru have completely repaired the base in just two days. A glass of Saki for everyone!

The RN decides to test IJN naval-air based at Kendari and get pasted. 12xBetty's score 4xtorp hits. Two Betty's are forced to ditch on the way home with one crew saved. I think the Brits were staging at Koepang for a raid on Kendari or Macassar. Air search thinks there was 2-3 cruisers plus DD's. The long arm of the law says not here!

The Indian Army has completly stopped the Japanese Juggernaut north of Raheng strong defense`s are being prepared to repulse the Japanese when they reach Moulmein we are confident of success there as well. The Dutch navy has demonstrated a remarkable ability to catch Japanese ordinance thus keeping it away from more vulnerable targets.
Singapore we fear is about to be assaulted the defenders are frantically trying to turn the guns of the fort around to bear northward. The Australian`s from Johore Baru have arrived with tale`s of atrocitie`s being committed by the Japanese army this only strenghens our resolve to fight. For King and Country we shall fight to the death.[:(]

Manila Surrenders, 1-11/1-12-42

Post by Mark VII »

After only four days of heavy air-ground bombardment and two days of ground attack, the weak-in-spirit Americans surrender and hand over Manila with barely a fight. OK, well they fought for one day and then threw in the towel. Better yet, all facilities are totally intact with over 32,000 supply and 10,000 fuel left in warehouses and depots. Do these Americans have any honor? Clark Field is now flanked with no river in the way of the 3 Divisions moving from Manila to trigger a untimely shock attack. The end is near on Luzon.

Last turn I ambushed some Allied raiders from Rangoon, well this turn Ed returns the favor and the AVG ambushes some Army Dive Bombers downing 20, its not that bad as it looked as somehow only 10 pilots were lost.

The IJN has several ASW TF looking around for those sneaky Allied Subs and I am getting 3-6 contacts and attack attempts each day. Am only posting those that get hits, seem to be getting a successfull attack almost every day or two.

Failed to save the combat report. Highlights include AK Idaho is hit by two torps 4hexes NE of Palmyra. She sinks four days later only 50 miles NE of Palmyra with elements of the 2nd Marine Division on board...hmmm.

The mini KB continues its mission to hit the Dutch MTB's at Amboina. Anticipating the Dutch coming out to play and attempt a surface interception, mini KB retreats 120 miles and waits. Sure enough, 6-7 MTB's show up on the old position and find only blue sea. However, after 2 days of attacks, the Kates fail to get even one hit(and we are flying at 100 feet), very disappointing. Mini KB is ordered to retire to rearm the CV's.

Several DMS's show up at Midway and my sub laid minefield seems cleared with no hits, oh well! I love those new radio transmitters installed on those mines that keep me informed on what is happening in the Midway lagoon! They even tell me the names of the American ships that destroy each mine, the technology is just amazing.

Speaking of technology, the Admiral in charge of R&D tells me that the new laser-guided air-launched torpedoes have finished testing and are ready for their first operational use somewhere at the front.

Lastly, a Dutch ML is sunk off Sumatra by Betty's getting two torpedo hits.

The PT`s from Amboina were the decoy for the Kates from the mini KB but Warhawks chose not to fly in their support. I am afraid that Australia is the Japanese destination and we have MacArthur in command there and this time PT boats will not save his hide. However on a bright note massive amounts of war material are coming out of the factorie`s now. Soon the supply situation for the Japanese will become a worry for them.
What with all the bases he has conquered he will have trouble feeding them. Moulmein has fallen but the defending forces retreated in good order across the river. We keep telling our Dutch allies to resist till help arrives but I am afraid that promised help may not be forthcoming. Our Burmese and Indian Allies have been experimenting with War Elephants this technology shows promise you can pack several hundred pounds of exposives and some armor on them and, well the results are impressive, if a little messy.
We are finalizing plans for a major counterpunch and will soon unleash the power of the US Armed Forces.

THE FIRST DAY OF YOUR DIET IS THE HARDEST
THE SECOND DAY IS EASY CAUSE YOU QUIT

Alor Star 1/17-1/18/42

Post by Mark VII »

Alor Star, Kuala Lumpur, Moulmein and Marassar all fall. The 5xIndian Inf brigades of Northern Malaya are all now officially surrounded at Songkhia. They will be attacked starting on the 19th. The Army at Johore Bahru is now heading into Singapore with a Mixed Brigade leading and everyone else following so there should be only one 'shock attack' for crossing the river. There are 3xdivisions, 2xMixed brigades, 2xTank regiments, 3xEngineer regiments, 3xArty units plus the 25th Army HQ. Heavy air bombardment of ground units begins this turn to help them accross the river.

For some reason a small TF with mine sweepers decided to go thru Singapore on their way back to Saigon from Johore Bahru. The little hex trail showed they would go around but instead they take a short cut[:@] Scratch one fast MSW, just stupid that would happen! They did clear some mines so I guess if 25thXXX gets bogged down in Singapore the way could be open for a BB bombardment force to help things out.

I had noticed that a enemy sub had stayed parked on Wake Island for four days, split off the escort from a nearby passing supply TF to check it out. The slow and not quick turning Argonaut did not have a chance even with this bunch of ASW rookies.

CL Durban sinks after earlier encounter with IJN Betties. She was only 60 miles from port on Northern Oz.

Moulmein captured and it seems if most of the Army that started the war in India is now in Burma defending the river line. There is alot of them but I wonder if their low experience levels will betray them when the time comes for a IJA major assault? If I can destroy this Indian Army I wonder how much will be around to defend India?

Clark Field 1/19-1/20-42

Post by Mark VII »

Once again I question the fighting ability of the American soldier. Homma orders the first ground attack on Clark Field and the Americans flee in disorder leaving the airfield intact(with the remains of another airgroup left behind)and over 29,000 supply laying about. Defending was a USA RCT, 2xPS RCT, 1xUSA Tank unit, a PS Cav unit and four support units. The first sight of Japanese advancing with mounted bayonets was all it took....RUN AWAY....RUN AWAY....with MacArthur leading the way and his Army leaving 39 guns behind. No massive surrender this time as they all ran into the stinking jungle of Bataan but the end is near on Luzon! Already debating if I should take out Bataan sooner than later(once San Marcelino is cleared) or to withdraw a couple of divisions for use elsewhere and then bomb and starve the remaining Americans in Bataan for a attack much later.

The English with the help of American B17's have started to bomb Moulmein in an effort to slow down our advance into Burma. Two B17C's crash on their way back to base! They may have some initial success but with things wrapping up in the Philippines and Malaya, reinforcements will soon be on the way.

Sent some Zero's to Batavia looking for some action. Splashed 6xHawks and 5xBrewsters for no loss. Good work men!

Singapore entered 1/21-1/22/42

Post by Mark VII »

A good two days for the Japanese Empire.

Three divisions, two Mixed Brigades plus supporting units jump into Singapore and are forced into two shock attacks. Losses are moderate but mostly even for both sides, the fort is reduced from a 6 to 4 level. The days of Singapore being refered as the Gibralter of the Pacific are numbered.

In Burma, the 33rdXX, a brigade from the Imperial GuardsXX and the 8th Sasebo SNLF force a crossing of the Salween River 60 miles north of Moulmein during two days of heavy(shock attacks) fighting. Lucky for me for the two-day turn as I don't think I would of attacked the second day if we were on one-day turns. The first day shock attack did not go well and the 33rd suffered some losses. On the second day, many of the defending Indian formations had second thoughts(low experience) about their safety and did not fight and thus Japanese forces achieved a 3-1 attack and drove the defenders out with the Indians fleeing in panic. BANZAI!!! The 8xCommonwealth units defending the river line 60 miles to the East(across from Rahaeng) are now flanked, their road cut and are in big trouble. I wonder if I will be soon seeing "RUNAWAY" by the Commonwealth forces.

The 5 Indian brigades trapped at Songkhia are proving more durable than I would of thought. In spite of 3-1 attacks I continue to suffer heavier losses than the defenders. India should be proud of these men but sooner or later they will be building railroads for the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.

All out attacks beginning on Port Moresby and Amboina starting with BB bombardments and surface TF's clearing out those pesky PT boats. The Dutch Far East Navy has been eliminated but they fought well going down. Three front line IJN DD's sunk and a second line DD with medium damage at the hands of Dutch CL's, DD's and PT boats.

In preperation for Naval bombardments at Rangoon, minefield clearing ops have begun. So far-so good. The British high command orders a Indian Brigade to attack my bridgehead on the Salween. Since they had to cross the Sittang River(I think) to get there, guess what? A shock attack![X(] Lets just say it did not go well for those ordered into the breach.

Those damn 5xIndian Brigades surrounded at Songkhia continue to hold on. The 5th XX, two brigades of the Imperial Guards and some support units are pouring it on. Why don't they surrender? A nice work release program is ready for those who give up.

In Singapore the troops get two days of rest with bombardment only. Heavy airstrikes on the defenders. The ground assault begins at 0500 on the 25th.

Another good two days for the Japanese. Progress made across the map. I have five major ops going at the same time with three supported by major elements of the IJN. Burma/ Rangoon, Singapore, Amboina, Port Moresby and Luzon.

In Burma an opportunity may be developing. After several days of successfull minefield clearing operations, two IJN BB's and two CA's sneak in and plaster Rangoon with a naval bombardment. 19 a/c destroyed on the ground including 11 AVG P40B's, hope a pilot or three was quicker getting back to the airfield after trying to drink off the bitter taste of defeat from the earlier drubbing in the air. The airfield is closed for the day, wonder how much supply the Brits have around for repairs? On the 27th, a inbound 3xCA bombardment force will arrive to add to the carnage and panic. Several Sentai of Sally's andZero's are now in range and will also be attacking the airfield from the air. If the Rangoon airfield complex can be closed, the 20+ Commonwealth ground units that are within 120 miles of Rangoon will be doomed!

The investment of Singapore is almost complete. The attack on the 26th was a 3-1 and reduced the fortifications to a level 3. I predict a massive Commonwealth surrender by the 28th or at the latest the 30th!

Landings in Amboina almost complete, assault in a couple of days once we are ready.

After the 5xBB bombardment on the 24th, large scale landings have begun at Port Moresby. Aussie resistance is light and losees are light to moderate with the landings. IJA intell has identified the 1st Brigade, the 2nd Tank Rgt, the PM Defence Brigade and 2xBF's in the PM area. There seems to be another gound unit but no prisoners yet from that unit so it is not ID'ed yet. PM has been reinforced but a enemy arty attack only wounded 9 men the evening of the 26th. The 56th XX, the South Sea Det. and a SNLF are in the progress of landing, don't think these Aussie's will be able to hold out long. The next couple of days will see another naval bombardment along with airstrikes from KB and Nell's from Rabaul. The ground assault should begin on the 29th!

San Marcelino is now down to 1 level fortifications. They should be surrendering within the next two days, then on to Bataan!
