How do we defaet adjacent countries????

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

How do we defaet adjacent countries????

Post by GBS »

Playing Spain, I covet Portugal. It is a protecterate of Britain who I am at war with. I attack and defeat the British army there. I have had Lisbon under seige for at least 15 months. I have tried fire at walls and Attack walls. I have not tried starve. Other countries attack and lay seige to my provence and are successful in usually 3 months or so. What am I doing wrong. Very frustrating.

Your army needs to be big enough and should have artillery in it. Other than that blockading the port will also help. Even when you have done that you still need to defeat England or all you get is a captured provence.

Correction: if you win a war, you can only make an enemy LIBERATE a protectorate: not cede it to you. Then you would still need to conquer it.

Anyway, your question was about the siege: Watch your event report - does it say that you are beseiging the city? (After awhile you get smoke going up from it too).
-- if not, you need more forces to effectively seige the city. (the defenders get helped by lots of factors - its in the manual)
-- if you are seiging the city, it probably says that they are being relieved by sea... The buggers are having food rowed in! Without being able to blockade the port, you might NEVER get in. More likely however, is that they will suddenly give up one fine day. Youa re close to my record for how long they hold out though: I don't think I've seen anyone last a whole year - except for Gibraltar.

If you can't blockade, I would send overwhelming force, have at least one unit [ideally of militia] set to "CHARGE", and try to kill lots of baddies. Or just win the war and make the British liberate it.

[The guys set to CHARGE will take extra casulties, but everyone in the stack gets to fight...]

15 months is a very long time to seige a province in this game, probably close to double the maximum I've ever encountered. I can only assume that you don't have enough troops to actually carry out a seige. I think you need at least 50,000 (?) with artillery, so maybe your losses are taking you below that number. Do you actually see the 'Seige in Portugal' (or whatever the province is called) notification float up every month of the 15?

'Even when you have done that you still need to defeat England or all you get is a captured provence.'

Surely that's not right? Whenever I defeat a protectorate it immediately becomes mine completely, with the ability to alter all production and recruit troops, regardless of whether I've defeated its former protector.

I may have that wrong as I have yet to actaully take a protectorate, not too many of them in 1792.

If you have conquered a protectorate and got the provence then he is on the right track, just needs to kill the garrison.

I am having the same problem with Lisbon, except the other way around - I am the English. For some reason, Lisbon is holding out forever, even when blockaded. I am not experiencing these problems with any other city, nor is the AI as it takes Gibralter faster than I can capture Lisbon. Very strange.

Well thats what used to happen, but since the patch captured protectorates seem to return to their former major, all I can do is demand "liberate" during the surrender treaty phase.. happened just last night, me as France, Hesse, Mecklenberg, and Thuringia all went back to Swedish protectorates, having been conquered by France.

Thinking about it, it only seems to be Sweden, and happened when Prussia (AI) captured Thuringia (Swedish protectorate).. when they made Peace Prussia teleported and I moved in, captured it and was then also teleported out several months later as it reverted to Sweden.... all other powers seem to loose protectorate status, and the province becomes "mine" with no strings...... something seems wrong? or am I missing something really really obvious[:(]

I was going to put this in the bug forum but we seem to be discussing part of it here. I've noticed that sometimes when you capture a protectorate, you own in outright, and other times, you don't. I'm very confused on why it happens one way sometimes and another way other times.

As far as the siege logic, I have a couple concerns with that too. I had a beat up old russian army take Friesland from me in one turn. It was garrisoned with two full strength militia and the russian army was small <50k with no artillery since I had beat it around many times before. Incidentally, when they captured Friesland from my Dutch protectorate, they owned it outright. I immediately took it right back but since they had ownership, I only "occupied" it until they surrendered to me. Doesn't seem right.

I've just conquered my first protectorate that hasn't become mine fully, just captured. But Prussia offered a limited surrender the next turn, so I got her to cede it to me as part of the treaty. [:)]

Now I know what you guys have been going on about...[;)]

This might not be your problem but it is possible that you have fallen out of war on occassion...there is a known bug regarding multi-province minor nations where you need to redeclare war over and over again in order to keep the seige up and running....
