Upgrading air units

Hi!

Can someone give me a hint about upgrading air units? I'm playing as Japanese in a PBEM game and I have some old Nate squadrons that I want to upgrade to Zeros, but I'm not allowed. I have Air HQs at the base and over twice the needed supplies, but I get the message that the HQ is too far away and there is not enough supplies at the base. This also happens when I'm trying to upgrade bomber units.

The HQ you need to have at the base is the one the unit is attached to, i.e. Southern Area Army, etc. Putting in a Jap Air Flotilla or Air Division isn't enough.

But what is the use of the Air forces HQs? Only support?

See 7.2.2.6 in the manual: Air HQ's allow level bombers to fly offensive air missions at full strength.

You can't upgrade an IJAAF unit to an IJNAF plane type. Zeros can only be put into naval fighter units. Your Nate units can (at the beginning of the war) be upgraded to Oscars.

You will never be able to upgrade Nates (Army fighters) to Zeroes (Navy fighters). If you have chosen the option 'player defined upgrades' at the start of you game (started with v1.6 or later), you may change the upgrade path but only to an aircraft of the same category.

Example: Nates upgrade to Oscar II, you may change it to Oscar I, Tony, Ki-44, Ki-84, etc... but you won't be able to convert to any type of Zero

As for air HQ their main interest is to allow bombers to fly missions at 100%. Any raid launched from a base without an air HQ will see its strenght (in plane number) reduced by 25%. They also help IIRC with organizing raids better and with repairing AC faster.

Thanks for the quick responses. So I need to locate the main area HQ to upgrade the air units that belong to that, is there any requirements concerning supplies too?.

The whole "upgrade Nates to Zeros"-issue was just a snag to check if you guys were on the alert... [;)]

Check section 15.2 in the manual. Right at the beginning is a list of requirements for air groups to upgrade.

You can also fly your A/C to the HQ base hex and upgrade there.
