Actually, given German nature and the fact that Carl is Karl in German, I always thought it was Anton, Bruno, Caesar, Dora.

Of course, this begs the question... what were they if they had five or six turrets? what was E and F? Emil and Frederick perhaps?

Sounds very likely... maybe Emil and Franz, which is what I believe they called the Me-109E and -F, respectively.
