Real Guinness has to be tasted in Ireland. The beer cask and the gas cask have to be kept separate. Abroad, they mix it all up in one single pressurised cask. [X(]
The real secret is in the pouring technique. It has to be poured at 45 degrees onto the inside of the glass, left to settle for 3 mins, then topped off and scraped. In mainland Europe, the bars just pour it out in one go and throw it at you!
For an extra bonus, does anyone know which country consumes the most Guinness (clue: it's not Ireland, US or GB!)

The funniest thing (to me) is that when I went to Ireland I found that they had beer in almost every store where I was (Cahirciveen in Kerry IIRC).

Evidently hardware stores have Guinness, what did I know. Good stuff, even if it is room temperature, plus you can buy tools while your drinking. [:D]

Yeah, I love my English/Irish beers too. Newcastle ale and Guiness are ALWAYS in my beer fridge regardless of what else may be in there. As far as a different summer beer, have you tried Steinlager? It's a New Zealand beer and is probably my favorite lager. Very refreshing when the weather's hot....

I suggested seriously before it came out that they should charge at least $100 for it. It promised massive detail and scope of play, and I knew that no matter how hard and long they worked on it they were going to need at least two more years of detailed patching and re-working to really "get it right". They didn't, with the result that they can no longer justify large fixes based on the income potential. So we are left with a game that is interesting and a challenge, but still has some irritating problems that are never going to be fixed. And it was "cheap" folks such as yourself that kept the price down and left us with an unfinished product. Kept talking about how a computer game shouldn't cost that much.

Pay attention. A VW beetle and a Peterbuilt Freightliner Semi are both Vehicles, Both will take you where you want to go. By your reasoning, both should cost the same. You and I know that's idiotic. This game is a "semi". It's huge! The war in the Pacific with DAILY turns and INDIVIDUAL ships and A/C! It's a "grognards" wet-dream. Uncommon Valor, it's predecessor, was priced more along the lines you mention---but it covered less than one-sixth the area and units and such; less than half the time span,; and really didn't include logistics to any great extent. And it was a BIG game. Yet WITP doesn't even cost twice as much---an enormous bargan! The real problem with WITP is that 2by3 didn't have the nerve to charge what it SHOULD have cost. Done right, it would have easily justified a $159.95 pricetag, and still been the cheapest money for time spent investment you ever made. Even with it's flaws, it's still easily worth $80 bucks. I'm one of the louder complainers, but I'll admit that without hesitation. If it wasn't already a hell of a game it wouldn't be worth complaining about.

I really do not think you were in the buying mode anyway. I'll go with the others, I paid the $79.00 the first day war it the Pacific was available. I have played it all most every day since then. I would call it an excellent value and yes, I would have paid $150.00 if that was the price.

I have UV, again purchased the first day it was available, and still play two PBEM games. I would call that at least an excellent value. I probably paid $40.00 or more for the 1.1 version of PacWar a long time ago and only quit playing it sometime after UV came out( had to finish a couple of PBEM games)

I'm not in any way connected with Matrix or 2x3 games, just someone who understands value when it is available.

I've been to Irish pubs in NY that use separate gas, as well as pouring it exactly as you describe. There's nothing to compare it with, really.

And I agree with Lord Calidor on Hoegaarden. Wonderful beer. Belgians make the best beer in the world.

His warning had nothing to do with the topic, WITP or his opinion of it's pricepoint.....it had everything to do with the insults and vitriol he started throwing around. The Forum policy you and every other user agreed to upon signup kicked in at that point and he was warned. Nothing more or less. And just because a user here has purchased a game or games from here at Matrix, it does not give them any right to ignore the Forum policy. The rules apply to one and all, at all times, on all forums public and private.

Now, the last few posts have been on topic and let's see if it stays that way. If all of ya wish to talk about beer (Leinenkugel rules!), start a new thread in the General Forum. This place is for WITP.

If you can handle the vast complexity, or can't but like getting slapped around at an excruciating level of detail, then this game is worth well over $80.

If these two things are not true then the game is worth much less than $80 for you, and in fact it could have negative value.

There was a thread some months ago that went into a lot of detail about both the price of the game and pricing strategy in general, there are some very well thought out answers to your question about the price, some of which may be better thought out than the original thinking behind the $80 price point.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but the only reason this game is worth $80 is because the market is small enough that they have a monopoly, and hence they can charge as much as the market will bear. The $/per hours of enjoyment argument is just as BS as it was 2 months ago, per that explanation all anyone should be playing is freeware games because even if you only enjoy them for a few hours they are always better in terms of $/per hours of enjoyment they a game you have to pay for. It also fails to take into account the degree of enjoyment, see why give a game more credit if they stretch the "length" of enjoyment out by having excess loading times or long lulls in the action coupled with painful micromanagement. That's not to say there aren't those who like micromanagement, heck I suspect certain members of this forum would die happy if you could handpick individual soldiers to perform an invasion and could track supplies down to the last roll of toilet paper (for some reason I can see a newcomer complaining that a base in a malarial region suddenly experienced a surge in disablements, and a veteran telling him to check the TP supply at the base). Basically, this random complaining is just to let MG and 2by3 that there is a larger market for the game, but they aren't quite hardcore enough to drop $80 on a game with painful mircomanagement, poor documentation, and a variety of flaws.

Let me try and answer the question. The market for WITP is small and the developers must make a return on their investment. Its simple economics. If the game had the potential to sell several million copies like some of the X-Box games, the price could have been reduced due to volume sales. Sadly, the sales base for WITP is relatively small; therefore the price goes up. The developers had to strike a balance on making a profit and not overpricing the product. They settled on 70 bucks. The strategy was that the "fanboys" would accept this price because of the quality of the game and the longevity of the playtime. You've seen the post, when you calculate how many hours you will be playing verses the cost, it works out to a fraction of a penny per hour. You can’t get a better deal on entertainment anywhere else. I’m sure they hoped word of mouth would bring in a few sale as well as Matrix costumers reading the boards. Which I think it has. The price was not set to gouge anyone. Hope this answers your question.

Well, I for one feel I've gotten my money's worth. WitP is an excellent successor to PacWar, I can live with most of the flaws it has (and I'm not saying there aren't any), and it introduced me to this forum, where I enjoy spending time.

i'm enjoying it, just as I enjoyed War in Russia which also saw a loooong run on my computer. Frankly i'm amazed that the price for a game of such scope hasn't gone up in 20+ years.

+ i get the added bonus of humiliating sons of Denmark.
