RE: What what what!?!?!
I cant imagine why anybody would object to the price of this game. The man hours of research to build the database alone will be difficult to recover. I play this and UO....difference is I have to pay every month for UO and its getting steadily worse. I pay one time for WITP and it gets better and better. Now with CHS we have an entirely new game. This is truely the game that keeps on giving.
Thanks Matrix!

RE: What what what!?!?!
This subject was being discussed in this forum before WitP was released. I remember there were a fair number of people who thought $70 was to much for a PC game, and there were also a fair number of Matrix supporters. The same arguments were being made then as are being made now in this current thread. At the time WitP was being developed and tested, I, like many others here, was playing UV and looking forward to the release of WitP. My experience with UV and with Matrix Games in general made me somewhat excited about the upcoming release of WitP. At that time there was no question in my mind that I would buy WitP regardless of it's price. I purchased the downloadable version shortly after its release paying the full $70. I also spent more than that buying WitP maps, T-shirts, and coffee mugs. I am quite satisfied with my purchases.
As I said in the first thread on this subject, money and value are very personal subjects. For some $70 is alot of money, for others pocket change. Personaly I don't feel that $70 is alot to spend for the amount of entertainment WitP provides. In my case the cost is reasonable for the high level of value received.
Anyone who would suggest that Matrix set the price of WitP in order to gouge their customers is obviously not familier with the Matrix family.
Before I close, I want to say that the number of laughs I enjoyed while reading this thread was probably worth $70.

The world has never seen a more impressive demonstration of the influence of sea power upon history. Those far distant, storm-beaten ships, upon which the Grand Army never looked, stood between it and the dominion of the world. -- Alfred Thayer Mahan

RE: What what what!?!?!
There have certainly been plenty of posts asking "Not sure if I want to buy, what do you guys think?" I've answered many of those. Then you have the posts that "ask" WTF is wrong with Matrix for pricing WiTP at $70?!?!
The first post, as Mogami stated, is legit and deserves a reasoned response, respect, etc. The second is someone who wants to start trouble, and as Jarhead's subsequent and inappropriate comments showed, this is nothing more than such a thread...
That looks like my high horse over there - think I'll get on and ride off into the sunset! [:'(]

RE: What what what!?!?!
OK, I have been looking at this thread for some time and now decide to put my 2 cents in. As you can tell...I am new here, so here it is from my perspective. I never heard of WitP until through word of mouth from a friend so I checked out the web page. I liked what I saw and bought it. A week later I bought UV. I have enjoyed both and find them both worth the price paid. I particularly like UV as that section of the South Pacific is where my father spent most of his WWII service. The map has detail to the extent that I could follow my fathers moves island hopping across the South Pacific. Dad is gone now but I have his WWII photo's and am proud of him and his service. I remember his stories about the planes and life on the islands. In an odd way the game helps me understand what he went through. Just a thought from somebody new to all this.

How many do we need for 4? Boy I hope it's 300.

I guess there's only one way to find out . . .
RE: What what what!?!?!
One . . . more . . .
RE: What what what!?!?!
Nope. Rats.
Back on topic - I'll join all the guys out there and say this was the best $70 I've spent on a game. Knowing what I know now, I would've shelled out another 30 to have it more polished.
Other niche game makers are doing the same, btw. Steel Beasts II, the sequal to what has to be the greatest tank sim ever (greatest sim ever? 640x480 is a bit rough on the eyes) is going to cost over $100 . They too have a limited market. Shame really since it's easy to pick up.

RE: What what what!?!?!
I think that Skyros had an excellent point. If Matrix had priced the game too low, then the chance of truly negative reviews (not just those from Ron and Mike) would have vastly increased, and have been spread all over the internet.
It does take a certain type of gamer to enjoy a monster like WITP. I honestly didn't think that I was one of them. I have played wargames for the past 36 years, and even messed with some of the monster boardgames (how many of you guys ever tried to combine all the Victory Games' Fleet series games into one single game? Ditto for the Great Campaigns of the American Civil War series). Thing is, I never finished any of those monsters, but regularly played the smaller games through to the end. It is the combination of the subject matter and the game engine which keeps me playing WITP. I know that the engine has its serious faults, but it is very playable. I was never able to really get into Pacific War, as the interface was just too obtuse. WITP is a serious improvement.
A piece of advice to Jarhead... when you want to get serious responses to a question, you shouldn't start out insulting those from whom you wish to receive the responses. A simple "How do you WITPers justify having spent $69.99 on a single game?" would have received all the responses you wanted without the "less than nasty" quips.
For me, as a person who has long been addicted to strategy games and thus normally buys between 10 and 20 games each year, the last fourteen months have consisted of one game purchase: War in the Pacific. I have no problem justifying the $100 I spent to get WITP (including shipping and a "tip" to the forum member who purchased it at Origins on its original release date). WITP has saved me a lot of money, and is worth far more than what I paid (and is worth seriously more than most computer games).

RE: What what what!?!?!
The positive side: HEX-games like WitP are about the only ones you get any long-time satisfaction out of. And I guess WitP is the king of HEXes at the moment. EUR70 is rather steep compared to other computer games, but one will propably play it a lot longer than other games.
The negative side: For EUR70 per copy one could really expect a better product. I just can't ignore the many logical flaws and hiccups and programme-technical deficits (and exit-button crashes). This thing is programmed like it is still early 1990's.
So, if you don't care about having EUR70 more or less PLUS time to kill on your hand - buy it!
Question is, will there ever be a better HEX-strategy game? I personally doubt it, since the market is small, and developers tend to start at point zero each time and there is basically no evolution.

Mogami...Madflava13...and anyone else who had their feelings hurt by my initial post...My advice to you is to hike up your skirts...I'll try to post subsequent questions in a manner that is suitable to your sensitive feelings...Seriously, some of you show a distinctr lack of a sense of humor and really should lighten up...MY devotion to companies like Matrix, HPS, Shrapnel and Battlefront can hardly be questioned...so yes, Madflava...you should get off your damn high horse...
There have been some serious replies to my question (none of which have been made by those complaining) and I see the opposing arguments to what I consider to be a price that is too high to pay...I agree with the poster who said that determining what amount is acceptable to spend on a game is a personal decision...obviously, 70 dollars for a game that does not even come with a written manual is way out of my price range...I just can't help feeling that the price is going to hurt more than it is going to help and I say that strictly from my own feelings...had the price been lower, I wouldn't be arguing with anyone, I wouldn't have hurt anyone's feelings and I'd probably be playing the game instead of typing this...

Hi, You didn't hurt my feelings and you also did not post a question. You posted a statement. Before you worry about the length of my skirt get your own panties out of a wad.
Consider the response you would have gotten had you entered a resturant, looked at the menu and then stood on your chair "25.00 for a steak thats insane you should be ashamed" You would have been shwon the door. We did not show you the door.
And in later posts it was again you who sounded like your feeling were hurt that we did not all just agree with you.
What was the point of your posting this thread? It was not a question. so it did not merit an answer.
It's nice you'll tolerate Matrix prices as long as they are below 50. If you can't afford more thats sad I know the feeling. However that still does not give you any rights to call people insane or suggest they should feel shame or that they are robbing you.
You don't have to worry about hurting our feelings but don't act huffy when the response you get is in the same tone as you use when you post. Actually I think the responses to you were much more tolerant then what you have posted
(ANd I don't wear a skirt at home. I prefer my pink bunny suit)

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

Maybe he should be shown the door...
Sorry, not my place to say that, probably. I've put him on my block list, so I've done my bit for me...

I am but one man.......i tried cloning but they ended up like Frag...(drooling and chasing farm animals) [;)] Been busy working in my WitP lab.....(sounds of explosions ringing in the background)
Besides i cant top Mogami's explanation regarding the tone/nature of the initial post. I got the same impression when i read the proclamation/rant. Given said proclamation i felt my response was quite restrained. And i dont feel like a sucker for being more than willing to pay $80.00 for wargame this awesome...even if I have to put up with annoying Europeans like Speedy and Terminus the Danish Dimwit.
