Help me install Pacific War

Post by Jimi1978 »

I downloaded the game from the website but can't get it working. When I select play game the computer spits out the phrase "performed an illegal operation please shut down your computer".
I readily admit that I am not that great with computers and have probably made an elimentary error, but could somebody please help because I am eager to start playing.

It sounds like you have a memory problem. Why don't you check out the following threads for ways this problem has been handled in the past.

Hi there,
I got the very same problem, but the memory things don't work for me; are you sure it's just memory? If so, does the new version require more memory than the old version, which works just fine for me?

Jimi

I had the EXACT same problem on my PC at work.

Never did get it fixed. I did get the game running on the home PC.

I honestly thought my problem at work was my Novell Network crap, BUT it also may have been a RAM issue since I have so much pooh on my office PC.

Sorry, I am no help.

I'm having the same blasted problem on my home machine, which doesn't have ANY network crap on it. (just a lot of SCSI device crap)

Strangest thing, my "work" computer which I had ti turn in yesterday worked just fine, and it had a terrible memory shortage I haven't tried loading onto the new machine yet (600KB free or 614,000 bytes).

It's so bad on the home machine, which I hand built, that I can't even get the original pac war or WIR to run, same "illegal operation" error.

I'm checking free memory on the home box now... SHOCKER, only 499KB (511,000 bytes) free!!! It's all cluttered up with my Adaptec SCSI disk and CD driver (and sound blaster) DOS sh!t.

OK experten, do I need those DOS device drivers in the config.sys on the winblows 95 C drive???

Of course, since I have BOOT MANAGER on that box, I can always boot to PC DOS 6.3 and the old DOS games run FINE there, but re-booting is a chore, especially when I need to go back in and out of other programs.

I'm going to REM out the lines, I'll let you know...

Looks like memory is the culprit after all....

I REMmed out the SCSI device drivers in config.sys, no apparent ill effects, I can still read the O: drive (the CD-ROM drive letter, my drives go up to N .

Free memory went up to 576KB (589,000 bytes) If I can figure out how to get rid of SETVER and DBLBUFF from the DOS sessions, that'll free up another 3.5KB, DOSKEY sucks up 4.5KB and I think I can get rid of it for PACWAR and still keep it for everything else (I hope, because retyping command sucks!). That shoul give me up to 598,000 bytes free (585KB).

Anyway, by doing this, I can at least LOAD the Matrix PACWAR, don't know about running it yet.

How about creating a boot disk just for playing Pacific War? This way you don't have to change config.sys back again if you want to use your other dos-programms?

Jimi, Big E, are you still having problems?

If so, from the command line of a DOS session, type mem /c/p and let me know what you get. You might also want to post the contents of your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. I'll help you get more free memory. Unless there is some strange video graphics incompatibility vexing your system, the loading problems clear up once you get past a critical threshold of free base memory (lower 640KB). Around 590,000 bytes free is needed. That will allow you to load and run the program, but you'll get a "low memory warning" when you access carrier air groups. You can work through it. More than 600,000 bytes free is needed to avoid the low memory warning (I'm not sure of the exact amounts.

Clearing the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT of unnecessary items can save large amounts of memory. My home system which had only 499KB (511,000 bytes) free now has 604KB (618,672 bytes) free memory. That's a big jump and there's more savings to be had but it gets a little more complicated. I went from the "Illegal operation" winblows error message to not having any low memory warnings at all!

Here is my Config.sys:

REM [Header]
FILES=50
BUFFERS=32
REM [CD-ROM Drive]
REM DEVICE=C:\CDROM\SSCDROM.SYS /D:MSCD001 /PIO
REM [Miscellaneous]
REM [Display]
REM DEVICE=c:\windows\setver.exe
REM [COMMON]
REM DEVICE=C:\DELL\RTC.CLK +R

Here is my autoexec.bat:

REM [Header]
REM [CD-ROM Drive]
REM C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001
REM [Miscellaneous]
REM [Display]
PATH c:\windows;c:\windows\COMMAND;C:\Novell\Client32;%PATH%
Set NWLANGUAGE=ENGLISH
Set USERNUM=01
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\NETWOR~1\VIRUSS~1\40~1.XX\scan.exe c:\
@IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE

I used to know how to read this back in the 80's but not any more. I get the low memory error when viewing Carrier aircraft. Can anyone help me?

Thanks
