RE: What what what!?!?!
T my thoughts exactly.
WiTP is HUGE but at least we can save and turn it off. Longest day would need its own room to keep it in situ.
Sounds interesting. What sort of unit scale? Does it go down to individual tank stuff etc. I'm assuming not since that would be INSANE [X(]

Think of WitP, for just Normady, in even greater detail (if you can believe it).
All of Normandy, in 2km hexes, with company-sized units.

T you know I don't have time to read stuff I need it repeated over and over again [:D]
So how did they rate units per se? Assault value? Defensive capability etc?

Most of the allies are in Battalion size units with "step" breakdowns when they were damaged. Some of the Germans units were broken down into company size units. It really wasn't that bad. If I remember correctly it went from D-Day to August 30. And I think I was wrong before...each turn was 1 day. The game had Naval bombardment...Air units...Artillery...Coastal Guns....Infantry...AT....Armor....Mulberries....replacements....supply....Headquarter Units...etc.
But, you are correct, we had a gaming room dedicated and set up just for that game.[X(]
The unit counters had a Offensive rating...Defensive rating...and movement rating. The attacks were based on ratio of combined Offensive ratings:Defensive rating...roll the die...consult the chart. If the unit was too many hexes away from the HQ, then defense was 1/2 and no offense.

Scale is 2kn per hex, 1 day per turn, most units are battalions apart from some humingous artillery regiments. Units burn supply units to attack or fire arty barrages so, like the Gamers OCS, supply build-up controls the tempo of operations. For reasons best known to themselves AH decided to use German unit symbology instaed of NATO, but it looks really cool I have to say.

The play was very fluid. Maybe not very realistic, but it was a board game afterall.

Aging gamer populotion?!
Bah!
Knavey and I are brothers, have written into our wills that our sons (Matthew (mine) = 1 year, and Bryan (Dave's) = 2 months), will be taking over our PBEM games (the games will probably still be going long after we've flopped over dead).
But yes, my son will learn to play "Air Force" and "Dauntless" as soon as he can read a maneuver card.
"You want to play checkers? Phhhhtttt. Checkers is for sissies. I'll show you a real game. This one is "Squad Leader". Forget "skipping around board", or "jumping" over the enemy, in Checkers. In "Squad Leader" you use artillery to kill the bastards. And your Uncle Dave (Knavey), has got "Flat Top" and "The Longest Day". One day, you and I are gonna go over to Uncle Dave's house, and successfully defend Normandy against Dave & Bryan in "The Longest Day".
Oh. And don't tell your mother I taught you the word "bastard".
A new generation of gamers is in the making!

and what happened to the discussion about beer?
That was getting interesting... misguided, but interesting
How about considering a few more Australian brews?
