water, and other methods of cooling

Post by marky »

yes another thread...

if ya havent figured it out by now, im going at this colling problem i have with the same relentlessness, ruthlessness, and zeal that i went after in order to finally get UV running and be able to play it, for those of u who r familiar with that great struggle from last year[:'(]

neway[:'(]

how many ppl use water cooling?

lord calidor ik u have a water cooling system in ur pc

does any1 have any heavily modded cases?

and do side air ducts or air ducts of any type help?

this pic is from the mutantmod website if i remember right

im using it as an example and i hope im not breakin any laws lol[:'(]

id giv the link but i cant find it[X(]

any1 have a pc like that?[:'(]

id love to have an acrylic case, but i cant imagine theyre all that functional, at least not as much as an aluminum case, or maybe thats jus me[:'(]

and does ne1 know wher i can for sure get a line on these cable binders? cuz i think theyd really help the flow/temp situation

they look like electrical wiring binders that u see behind entertainment centers[:'(]

i definitely want to get an accurate temperature monitoring system in place so i can keep an eye on it

and perhaps a way to monitor key locations, namely-

1. CPU
2. vid card
3. hard drive perhaps
4. area of air flow

and any other areas wher heat may build up

as usual dont hold back suggestions, toys, links or anything that can help[:'(]

my thanx to all those who have already contributed, and to the ppl that will[&o]

i get 2 temp readings from that control panel

141+ Fahrenheit
104+ fahrenheit

i assume that the 141+ temp is near the CPU if i remember right

i hope to reduce the overal temp in the case (watever it may be) by 50% or perhaps more if possible...

that may be foolishly optimistic, but i will surely fight hard to achieve this goal...

so to sum up the goals of this project in nor particular order....

1. remove temp/fan panel (which doesnt even function correctly) with sumthing more useful- medium priority
2. create temperature monitoring system - ULTRA high priority
3. solve cable/wiring situation - high priority
4. reduce overall case temp by 50% or more if possible- ULTRA high priority
5. mod in sum cool toys[:'(]
6. improve air flow- high priority

This is what i did to cool my pc for good. It works very well and reduced the noise and temperatures of the system a great deal. I have a rack mount case, but this would work for any desktop case, I think.

1. Remove the top of the PC case altogether. If you want replace (or modify) with a top that is completely grilled (like your amplifier for your sound system).

2. Remove all fans except the one over your CPU and chip-set.

3. Make sure that hard-drives are mounted vertically, NOT Horizontally. This is VERY important but may not matter if you only have only one hard drive. I am speaking of newer HDs that can operate in 131 degrees F. Be sure to check the specs. I have 2 on my system, mounted verically side by side with 1/4 inch spacing in-between the drives, but clear space on either sides of both drives. This way the heat from each drive does not affect the other.

4. Replace your power supply (if it has fans) with a replacement that does NOT have fans. There are several on the market.

5. Make sure that the bottom of the case has feet, if not rack-mountable, and grills to allow cool air to enter the case. Operate the PC where cool air can get to it.

OK, for cables, choose some of these:
http://www.frozencpu.com/scan/se=Rounde ... d=R4ezxQrv
and these:
http://www.frozencpu.com/scan/se=Cable% ... h_top.html

For fans, if you have the space, use 120mm fans as they generally have more airflow for less noise than 80mm or 92mm.

For temp monitoring, I'd reccomend Aerocool or CoolerMaster products:
http://www.frozencpu.com/scan/se=Fan%20 ... earch.html
or if you want something more advanced, with excellent tweaking capabilities, yet not too expensive, Matrix Orbital LCDs:
http://www.frozencpu.com/scan/se=Electr ... earch.html

Marky I have that case and love it. My temp gage on front is off by 10 % from software montoring. So not sure which one is right.

No activity on cpu, temp is 93 to 98. Under heavy load 121-128.

i found an 80mm-120 mm fan adaptor

and i believe i will replace the top fan with this, and possibly 1 of the side fans

and i may or may not replace the rear fans using this adaptor-

http://www.bigfootcomputers.com/Merchan ... y_Code=115

the 2 fans in the front are pretty much wasted

as whoever designed the case put drive cages RIGHT in front of them on the inside

sure they can cool any drives ther

but only the top FRONT fan is in any position to cool wat appears to be my HD

its a mess in ther

and the bottom fan is wasted since its not blowing at anything and the cages r in the way so the fan is pretty much wasted

oi..........

this is quite a project....

I put an aftermarket cpu fan from TT on my Pent 3.2 and it made a huge diff in heat. Its loud but you get used to it. I also keep the door of my case which helps a bunch. Removed the dust guards for better flow and always blow out my case with air at least twice a month. I use the thick cables for connections also. You can reverse the fans also to pull air out, it helps. Our cases are the same. Its a great case, only drawback is its weight.

im gonna get more of these

http://www.bigfootcomputers.com/Merchan ... Code=100.2

installd 70+ CFM thermltake fan rear, temp drops abt 10 F, fluctuates, SQUEAKING LOCALIZED!

Post by marky »

the new fan has caused the temp to drop by about 10 degrees

tho it fluctuates, i am encourgaed

CPU temp steady at about 147 Fahreneheit

i think i will replace the CPU heatsink, and fan

will continue to hunt down high powered fans and other temp reducers

am considering removing several cages inside to increase space and improve airflow, but ill have to find a new way/place to store my HD

i was playing WITP

and it started squeaking again and didnt stop

got up and looked at case

and i got it sumwat localized

it is cuming, it seems, from the rear of the case, near the upper corner

this corresponds to...

*dum roll/dramatic suspensful music*....

the power supply!

tho im not sure of this

it could be another fan, or it could be the processor fan or the vid card fan at worst, and the power supply at best

hwoever i no longer believe that it is from the HD, as it seems to emanate from the REAR of the case

so i intend to replace the power supply and see wat that does...

i will of course be replacing ALL of the old fans with new more powerful fans

and in doing this ill prolly have to get a new power supply ANYWAY

also-

as u may know ive got a temp/air flow/ cable situation in my case

i think id like to remove sum of the cages to free up space and improve air flow, as thers only the 3.5 floppy drive near the top and the HD near the bottom

question-

1. can i remove sum of them and move the HD up near the floppy drive
2. can i remove the floppy drive and get an external 1 and remove that corresponding cage
3. can i move the HD so its vertical and work around it?

ill provide pix asap to show u wat im dealing with
