I just started playing Uncommon valor. god, I am sooooo lost lol. From what I've been able to figure out, you don't move your units around, you give them destinations. Is that correct? any input would be greatly appreciated [:)]

I have one. I'm playing UV now because it's a little less daunting than WiTP, which I plan to get. How much simularity is there between the 2 games?

RE: new player
It operates basically the same....
Differences:
Similarities:
There are as many differences as there are similarities.
Lee
Differences:
- UV is a 30 mile hex, WitP is a 60 mile hex.
- Refits and upgrades on ships happen in any base with a shipyard in WitP, in UV, you have to bring them to Brisbane or Noumea and then return them to Pearl.)
- In WitP, your ships arrive on a schedule, in UV, the schedule changes depending on a number of factors (how many ships you've lost, how well you are doing, how many ships you have sent back to Pearl.
- Pilots fatigue easier in UV.
- You start every turn with a full complement of supplies at Noumea and Brisbane. You dole it out from there. WitP, the supplies are generated at production areas and have to be transported to where it is needed.
- You control upgrades of your air units. In UV, you satisfy the prerequisites and it just happens depending on availability of aircraft.
Similarities:
- You organise ships in TFs and assign them missions. This basically works the same but in WitP, you set reaction ranges and such.
- You control the location, mission, altitude, etc. of you aircraft.
- You control the location and mission of your ground units.
There are as many differences as there are similarities.

Ok, from what I've figured out, you do not control ships but rather groups of ships(task forces). and you don't move units but give them destinations. and thanks for telling me where my suppiles start! I was totally lost on that one.

Welcome aboard ilove.
Learning UV is a great way to learn WitP, the general game mechanics are the same. Although I should warn you that I'm still learning WitP myself, and playing UV. Once you understand how to interface with UV you'll find the transition to WitP to be easier. The difficulties for me have been learning the details of this vast game, ie: becoming familier with the names, locations, and details of the bases, LCUs, and air squadrons. Organization of fleets and airgroups is also a job. Not to even mention logistics or production which I haven't even started learning. I am glad that I know UV already, as this alows me to start focusing on learning the details I've just mentioned.
I can also say that your in for a real treat. Both game are great. You've got some terrific fun (and pain) ahead of you. Find your self a pbem game as soon as you feel up to it.
Good luck and good hunting.

RE: new player
There are combinations, usually, to get the right result.
Example:
To do a Tokyo Express kinda thing, set the target hex and make sure the TF is set to 'retire allowed'. This will make the TF go to a jump-off point to make the run in the the target at night, bombard and get out before morning. If 'patrol/donnot retire' is set, it will sail straight in and bombard...probably during daylight where it gets pasted by aircraft.
If there is something you want your TF to do and you don't know, ask here and folks can usually let you know how to do it.

Read up on what the patrol/do not retire and retirement allowed options do for every kind of mission. It will save a lot of
pain. Its the last thing I look at before I leave a task force. Make sure it is set to what you want.
Edited for stupidity.

Some of the nicest people I've ever met are from Texas. So there!!!
In Texas a slow driver will routinely pull over onto the shoulder of the road to allow a faster car to go by. This is done without any prompting of any sort by the faster driver. The slower driver simply observes the faster vehicle aproaching from the rear and pulls over to allow the faster car to pass. Texas is the only state where I've observed these commendable good manners.

RE: new player
ok. i'm playing the tutorial. Man, this game is FUN!!!!! I finally learned how to move my task forces around. I know absolutly nothing about tactics and strategy but I'm having a blast. Darn Japs keep trying to take Port Moresby. I believe thats my main base and I just lost Lunga [:@]. This is a big step from Grigsbys World at war. Whew! One thing I'm puzzled about is what to do with my damaged ships. What do I do if only one or 2 ships is damaged, do I send the whole TF to moresby for repairs?

RE: new player
It depends on how heavily damaged they are and what scenario you're playing. You only have a certain number of ship points on the map, do you waste them on a cruiser damaged in the 40s? Think of it this way, the points that the damaged ship are worth are points that you're not getting from Pearl or Truk, as the case may be. Unless you really need that cruiser send it back to Pearl, hopefully you'll get another one soon.
Only send ships in danger of immediate sinking to emergency ports like PM or Lunga, especially ports in range of Betties.

Your main allied bases are Noumea and Brisbane...the main mission in UV is to keep Port Moresby and to cause him grief through the Solomons.
I wouldn't worry about damage on ships too much until it gets over 10.
