Bangers and Mash

INGREDIENTS:
8 large baking potatoes, peeled and quartered
2 teaspoons butter, divided
1/2 cup milk, or as needed
salt and pepper to taste
1 1/2 pounds beef sausage
1/2 cup diced onion
1 (.75 ounce) package dry brown gravy mix
1 cup water, or as needed

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place potatoes in a saucepan with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain, and mash with 1 teaspoon of butter, and enough milk to reach your desired creaminess. Continue mashing, or beat with an electric mixer, until smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until heated through. Remove from pan, and set aside. Add remaining teaspoon of butter to the skillet, and fry the onions over medium heat until tender. Mix gravy mix and water as directed on the package, and add to the skillet with the onions. Simmer, stirring constantly, to form a thick gravy.
Pour half of the gravy into a square casserole dish so that is coats the bottom. Place sausages in a layer over the gravy (you can butterfly the sausages if you wish). Pour remaining gravy over them, then top with mashed potatoes.
Bake uncovered for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until potatoes are evenly brown.

I've got to say that except for a few offensive remarks made by a certain gentleman during the early part of this thread, I have enjoyed reading here a great deal. Its certainly fun to see where peoples minds will go when they are able to express themselves without limits. The excellent and deserved strategy used by this group to derail this thread was interesting in itself. The diverse subject matter discussed here, was fun and interesting. I admit that at times sillyness was the motivating force behind much of the subject matter, but frankly I'm a firm believer that the world would be a better place with a little more sillyness and a little less seriousness. The subjects commented on here started out about money, average salaries and capitalism, and then covered a spectrum that included cyclotouriste, and superman, the cost of going out, dogs, and sheep, food and of course everybodies favorite subject, beer. There is also an interesting study in psycology here.

This thread is already nine pages long and has to be one of the most active on this forum with 260 replies and 4,306 hits. At the rate its going it will soon rival the WitP Wish List thread.

Anyway I'll close now by saying thanks for the fun guys.

I think we have all been callous in our attitudes and this really needs to be addressed by the moderators and possibly by Mr. Billings himself. I am quite offended and concerned by the fact that Shepards pie has been discussed separately from beer. You all know that they go quite well together. But NOOO you all ignore that fact and just want to carry on like they are mutually exclusive.[:@]

Have to agree with Stavka_lite on this...BTW,I REALLY liked Irish "steak and kidney pie", used to be imported to the U.S. in round cans, wider at the top, (shaped like a pie),, and you just cut the top off with a can opener and heated it in the oven..DEEE-LUXE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, yeah, one of you guys was discussing the fact that Guiness was real popular in Germany??..I used to hang out in a place called "The Irish Pub" in Sachsenhausen, (across the river from Frankfurt am Main), and they only served Guiness and played jazz..

This is the irony for me personally. I live in the UK and have done all my life but I rarely have what you would define British food! I rarely even eat potatoes. Normally pasta or rice meals. One 'British' meal I do like though is the good old roast dinner..........

Actually, Danish beer (at least the big brands that get exported overseas) isn't very good. It has a bitter aftertaste which disagrees with you.

For drinking outside of the alehouse environment, I like Urquell and Heineken.

I recall trying some a long time ago....yep, similar experience. I'll incur the wrath of Mogami for saying this but i've never liked Urquell either. Heineken is ok. and BTW bub....Guiness IS a beer.

For me. Lager wise the best tasting stuff i've had would be a Czech home grown brew I had in Prague (have never remembered the name of it). Tiger Beer + Chang Beer are also nice. I normally have Kronenbourg or Stella though.

An interestingly named one I had at this swanky London place a while ago was an Estonian beer called A Le Coq!

Now on to heartier stuff...Guinness is the way to go.
