HELP PLZ

Post by gizz »

greeting all, I posted this in the top help section for players by players, but it was sugested to me to post this question here also, soooo...... I'm have problems with this game, the numbers don't want to show up, all except 0, that number works, (though that don't help me much). I have a 1.1 GHz AMD Atholon with 256 RAM, a TNT M64 Pro graphics card. I've reloaded this game so many times that i have lost count, and scan disced, and defragged also, still no go. PLEASE, does anyone have any sugguestion that I might do to get this game running? i check these forums every day, in hope to find an answer to this question . That is when I'm not flying on-line in Combat Flight Simulator 2, with my SQDN that I am with . When i get this game running right, i can start doing AAR's too . Thanks for reading this rambling.

So you believed the Sales Rep when he told you the AMD processor was faster, cheaper and 100% compatable? I know several people with AMD processors and they have nothing but problems, especially with older game programs. I'll be surprised if you find a solution, but I do wish you the best.

About 95% of the operating problems with Pacwar I've seen discussed on this forum eventually turn out to be related to available RAM. REMing the RAM seems to be the general cure-all. (See other threads for details).

FYI, I have an AMD processor and no problem running Pacwar.

gizz, what's your operating system? (Win 95, 98, 2000, etc.) Also, how much RAM do you have free in the first 640K? To find out, open a DOS window and type "MEM /C |MORE".
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Hi all, thanks for the timelly responce. I checked the MEM in DOS, it says that there is 580 free, i do not know how to boost that up, (I'm computer blonde x[] ). But even without being able to see what i've got in numbers, I started taking on the Japaneese again . And the why as to why I bought a AMD machine? The Penium machines seem to freeze up after 950MHz, The AMD's don't. Also the window's is a ME. But i can't wait till this is fixed, so I can really play. Thanks again, I'll keep cheaking out the site for the answer to get this thing running right.

Gizz,

Your 580k of ram is probably the problem. This old DOS game really stretches the limits when it comes to ram. Try adding "rem" in front of each line in your config.sys file.

In other words, change

device=c:\windows\himem.sys

to:

rem device=c:\windows\himem.sys

Do the same to each line in this file using word pad or any other text editor and save the file. This should free up enough conventional (old dos) memory to run the game. Assuming of course that dos memory is the problem (it usually is). Oh, and none of this is of any use if you are using windows XP - then the fix is easier.

Hi again, WFLARRY i hear you, but like I said, I'm computer blonde. where is the file I need to change? I don't know how to get there to do the changes. i really don't know computers that well. do I go to the start button? to find my DOS RAM I had to do a file search, that took awhile, do i do this all the time to find my problem? Or is there a short cut i can use to get there? Yours truely, (complete Blonde) GIZZ 1

gizz,

I had a hard time getting PacWar to run on my Pentium III 450 Win98se but I finally did get it to run thanks to people on this forum and I'm only running it on 570 ram. One problem you may have is with Windows ME. I know many people that have lots of problems running games on ME. If all else fails you might want to consider using Win98se. It is probably the most stable. But, anyway, here's what I did and I don't know if Win ME will let you do this.

Mouse click Start. Select run. Type in "msconfig" (don't type the quote marks - I remembered you are computer blond)and hit run. On the window that comes up, select autoexec.bat and config.sys and if the contents show boxes next to each line, uncheck all of them. I don't know about Win ME but this has no effect at all on running Win98se. I did this and when I rebooted, to my amazement the game ran just fine. As I said, I don't know what Windows ME and I can't guarantee anything but check it out and see.

I did what you said, this is a windows ME. there is no config or a bat file there, soooo.... next idea please, a friend of mine that knows windows ME said that you can't change the DOS in windows ME, but I've been reading the forums and there a people out there using this game with no problem. So I will keep searching for the answer, any idea's will be helpful.

Hi Gizz

Like Wflarry said above it probably the memory. There is also a topic which deal whith this problem.

Do the following.
Boot your Computer.

Go to the start menu(bottom left of the screen).
Run the simulated dos mode(If you dont know this ask a friend).

You will see something like this C:windows\

Now type cd..

until there is nothing else than C:

Half way

now type: edit config.sys

This will show you a blue screen whit some lines.
Type rem at the start of the lines as wflarry told you.Dont miss to save. You can spend the line with mouse and the with Keyboard.

Example: Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himem.sys
will change to this
Rem Device=C:\WINDOWS\Himen.sys

This should give you enough space to run it properly.

Gizz,
that reminds me of the problems I had with a Compaq crate with PII 800+ and more than 600 conventional RAM free ('Scrambled figures' thread a year ago). Didn't work despite ample memory. In my case I accused the graphics 'card' which wasn't a 'stand alone' but a 'shared with RAM' thing. I reverted to my old AMD K6-2 333 with Diamond Monster II and 600+ RAM and contrary to Captain Akira's acquaintances I have no problems with running older games (e.g. 'Conflict Korea' 1992) despite AMD processor. I got PW running even with less than 580 RAM, at the expense of the 'carrier air group change out of memory warning bug' which is annoying, but not game stopping (how often do you change carrier aircraft?). So I don't think your problems are an AMD or memory issue and since you have a TNT, the shared memory doesn't apply either. I use Win 98SE. Like Dave, I would say Win ME is the culprit, I also know people having endless problems with it.

Hi again all, I did that thing using the start button\run\, typed in COMMAND, it brought up the ms dos prompt window.then typed in mem, to see if my memory was still 580k, it is (bummer).then typed in edit, which brought up the ms-dos edit, this has a blue screen. But now my question is how do i bring up that C:\=Device thing so i can change it? Remember I am using windows ME, not wid.95 or win.98. Once again i like to say how much I appritiate the help, thanks Gizz (The Blonde 1)
