DIEN BIEN PHU Anyone?

Post by abuck »

has anyone here played the dien bien phu battles (french vs. viet minh)? its a highly brutal battle for the french and made for a most excellent scenario. also, does anyone know if a 1960s circa vietnam campaign is being developed for the game? i think the steel panthers engine would suit this perfectly.

Hmm, don't expect it..
There are few things that are actually missing in Spwaw, to make a Vietnam campaign being a reasonable one; first thing coming in mind are helicopters..

You can find around in the Spwaw official release some interesting Korea scenarios, and a campaign, too.

There is already a campaign, for a previous version, and I guess not likely to be updated.

Since the forum software no longer allows .zip file attachments I can't put it here, but if you want it, either I or someone else could email it to you if you give an address.
thanks, John.

I liked the SPIII Vietnam campaign better than the SPMB senerios. Heliborne assult works wonders if you move your helos hex by hext to take advantage of the terrain. I hope some day SPWaW gets a modern battle system going.

I deveoped three campaigns on Vietnam in SP3, each one focusing on a particular aspect of the war. The first was on the Air Cav, the second, on Riverine forces; the third, on armor use in Vietnam.

They were well received among the 16 campaigns I did for SP3. Sadly they won't convert, as Resisti, has mentioned, because of the limitations of SPWAW.

An early French Indochina campaign is doable, perhaps on Groupment Mobile 100 and its sad demise in Indochina.

If any of you still play SP3, (not too likely!), those campaigns are available. They are a LOT of fun and have a real Vietnam feel to them.

Let me know!

I'm trying to play this scenario and not repeat the mistakes of the French (or at least all of them). I abandon Gabrielle and Beatrice immediately and focus all my efforts on covering the airfield.

I would like to play a 'what if' version, but haven't figured out the editor well enough to do so successfully. The French requested B-29s on the VM artillery and carrier airstrikes in a last ditch effort to save the garrison, but when President Eisenhower asked the senate majority leader if he would have congressional support for this he was told no and therefor turned down the French. Interesting irony there given Senator Johnsons later actions.

Any hints on how to do this?

SPMBT is the game you want for Viet Nam action, it runs from 1946 to 2020. It has helos and everything.

Dien Ben Phu is a campaign in it I believe. It works ok, fighting the Viet Cong doesnt really work well as the game doesnt model guerrila tactics well. And the helo landings dont work well as all it takes is for the other side to buy a lot of machineguns and chase off the helos. Any damage to a helo and the next turn it evacuates the board, any successful fire on it will cause it to flee 5 to 15 hexes away. Doesnt have to be a hit either.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

Depot? Just assume that I'm an FNG here and that I know nothing. You won't be too far off.
