What did they hope to achieve with this, I wonder?

I could be wrong but I suspect they mean to capture Singapore via direct frontal assault [:)] They had good intel on the position of our forces at Singapore and those at Johore. They knew we had 90% of our infantry strength at Johore and they were suffering terribly trying to get through at Johore. Imp Guard and 55th Div are up in Burma and therefore cant help out.
Those that said it couldnt be done were wrong. We are down to fort level 2 and are taking more casualties on each attack at Singapore than they are now. The forces at Johore are pinned. Singapore is going to fall and our forces at Johore will be isolated. Fortunately, we were not caught flat-footed and will not propose a surrender. The Allied forces at Johore are under daily shock attack but are dishing out 4:1 casualties
The cost to them will be 1/3 of 18th Div plus 6-8 small escorts and perhaps 10-15 AP's all in (counting the many which will sink inthe coming week).

No kidding, Mandrake! [:D] Amazing. I guess it just shows that if you're willing to make the sacrifices, anything is possible.

How would you rate that fight, Mandrake? Looks to me like the Allies got the short end of the stick on this one...

Allied Losses: 2 modern DD's, 2 PT's one AVD and 2/3 of the No. 115 RAF Engr
Japanese Losses: One CL, one MSW 2 AP's destroyed outright, perhaps 3 seriously damaged and 3 others with minor damage.
That is 2 Bishops for a Rook and 3 pawns...roughly equal...but US shipbuilding capacity allows even trades.
Loss of 65% completed airfield (plus Tassaforanga and Tulagi)and 2/3 of an Engr unit....clear operational victory for the Japs,
Loss-free bump in experince for US carrier pilots..a good thing for us.
Denial of a decisive carrier battle after a very cleverly laid Japanese trap....priceless [:D]

Bloody Hell. You're right. Damn 5 syllable words. I'll fix it. For the life of me, I dont know how these chaps rise to the upper ranks like that without knowing how to spell the names of their own ships.

Well, that's called the Peter Principle: You get promoted to your level of incompetence.

Yes that seems particularly true in this case as Gen Wavell certainly should have known better. I found this from the 1911 Eaton Yearbook..."Eaton debating club and it's President, young Mr Wavell, earned honors by defeating all comers on the assigned topic, 'resolved, that the Royal Navy should stop showing off by naming ships after big adjectives that nobody uses in oridinary speech anyway'..."

The Chinese hate the Japanese more than the Brits
Ever wonder what those Chinese divisions are doing assigned to SEAC at the start of the game? Apparently the Generalissimo (his title I think must have been an inside joke [:D]) went to FDR offering support. Here is a copy of Marshall's cable to the newly appointed Wavell (from the on-line FDR Library)
Marshall would have been a great President himself.

The scene off Johore Baru
Flak defending the convoys:

Japanese attacks have been light, and so far not a single bomb or torpedo has struck home. Allied fighters and flak have done better shooting down over a dozen Japanese attackers for the loss of less than 10 planes.
