PacWar - Win 2k

Post by Mort3 »

Is there a known problem with running this game under windows 2000? I can run WiR ok, but pacwar freezes just after the credits when you would expect the menu to appear.

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

There have been several people with problems with W2K. Check the older messages. One guy said he went back to W95 because he couldn't get it to work under W2K. Finding DOS games that won't run under W2K doesn't surprise me at all. W2K is derived from Windows NT, not W95/98. DOS support is weak in the NT line.

Agree'd, I knew I was pushing it trying to run a DOS game on win2k, but as wir works ok and it was the first one I tried I tried the same with pacwar but without luck.

I have dual boot with win98 so not a big problem more of a convenience thing really.

The PacWar versions are taking a little more memory than WIR, and the typcial crash point from short memory is about where you report, so I would bet that 2000 gives you just enough memory for WIR but a little short on PacWar. Could easily be something else, but the behaviour is similar to other OS reports also.

I too had the same problem. With Win98, WiR ran fine, PACWAR bombed out. I looked at the update notes for PACWAR and read that if PACWAR wouldn't run because of lack of mem, it was recommended that you comment out all line items in autoexec.bat and config.sys. I did so and the PACWAR ran fine in Win98. Just make sure that you remove the *REM*s after your're done. Hope this helps. My other solution was to load it up on my old Win3.1 PC with a boot disk. It also ran okay. Give it a try. Good luck.
