Ammo allocation

Post by TMO »

For some time I've been banging on about personal ammo allocation. My point was that most of the time troops would have carried more than the basic ammo load (i.e. more than is modelled in HTTR). Came across the following at :

http://www.rhodesfamily.org.uk/rhodes/r ... 1info.html

though the rest of it is worth a look as well.
June 5th Too worked up to sleep. Back to the Airfield at 12-o’clock to load Plane again. Load the Kit Bag that I will jump with attached to my leg. Contents: 10 Anti Tank mines; Pick & Shovel; a length of steel tube (3 ft) 2" Dia; 2 belts of Vickers M/c Gun Ammo; 10 Sten Gun Magazines; 10 Bren Gun Magazines; Radio Set. Total Wt: 175ilbs.

On my person: 5lbs Plastic explosive; six hand grenades; 1 belt of Vickers M/c Gun Ammo; 50 Rounds Rifle; 10 Sten Gun Mags.

What do you chaps think?

Tim,

Thanks for the info. While I appreciate that for the jump many troopers carried a lot more than there standard issue the reason was that they distributed the company and Bn reserve across the individual jumpers. Once on deck, much of this would have been offloaded to the company cart.

From my own personal experience I know of few soldiers that can march let along fight carrying a 175lb pack. 70lbs was more the norm.

In HTTR each company normally has two days worth of ammo on hand - one on the man and one in the company reserve. So I think we certainly modell that aspect already.

Actually, what interested me was not the quantity of bren magazines etc. carried but the number of rifle rounds - pretty much the exact amount modelled in HTTR. Looks like you boys have got this one about right and I've been overestimating.
