Question about 'Decisive Battles' series?

I was just reading about the 'Decisive Battles' series here at this website and I was wondering if anybody here plays them at all. I'm talking about the series with 'Battles of Italy', 'Korsun Pocket',etc. I just wanted to know if the scale and gameplay are similar at all to SPWAW. I remeber reading a review of 'Korsun Pocket' when it came out and it got very high marks but the reviewer went on and on about the complexity of the game and I think I remember something said about a 100-page manual that shipped with the game.

Well I played the whole series extensively. Do not play Korsun any more as the Newer versions have improved immensley, Battle in Italy is my favorite of the series, i guess each new installment brings new features.

The maps are absolutely beautiful as are the counters. PBEM games are just brutal, hot seat is fun as well if you have a fellow nerd over. A lot of quality scenarios that are constantly being published by the devs as well as some seriously talented forumers.


Its a great series but i can not really compare it to SPWAW because i just started playing SPWAW. Spwaw does seem to have more rules and amount of detail then BII or BIN, it just seems that Spwaw has way more you can do. That does not mean that i will put the Strategic series into the dust bin, its a beast of a game in its own right, just a little easier to play then SPWAW IMO. Also depends on if you have been playing these types of game for a long time, if you have not then either game will be a challange to master, or even give you a nervous breakdown trying to absorb the massive amount of info each game engine offers.

I would reccommend Battles in Italy to anyone.

In hindsight you should really ask over at the BII forums, or just peek around and read some of the great ARR's. The AAR's will give you a great idea of what the game engine is like.

I didnt like the interface, never could get into Korsun pocket so never bought anymore.
